Lazarus: A Special Soul Waiting for the Right Home —His Story Continues...

Lazarus is a deaf boy with a truly special soul. He was recently adopted by a wonderful family who gave him every chance, but sometimes the right intentions don’t always equal the right fit. In their home, their dog Ricky Bobby (also a Celebrity Pet - bless his heart — a 60kg hound) was simply too gentle to set clear boundaries, and Lazarus — still learning social cues — became a little overwhelming.

Being deaf, Lazarus relies heavily on confident canine and human guidance, and without clear canine correction, Lazarus wasn't "getting it". With his new owners - Lazarus was AMAZING and quickly learned new hand signal commands.

It also became clear that Lazarus is one of those dogs who is particularly perceptive to human differences. Some dogs are deeply attuned to variations in movement, sound, energy, or behaviour — just as we see with dogs that alert to illness, seizures, or emotional changes. In certain environments, this heightened sensitivity can present as uncertainty or nervous reactions.

For Lazarus, this was also a challenge — being deaf meant verbal cues weren’t an option, making it harder to guide and correct his reactions. This was the main reason he was returned, but it also highlighted exactly what kind of support and environment he needs to thrive.

Back with us, Lazarus has reminded everyone just how special he is. He has interacted exceptionally well with our Maremma, Hodor, who confidently and fairly sets boundaries — and Lazarus responded beautifully. The two play well, respect each other, and show us exactly what Lazarus needs: a dog-savvy home with clear leadership, structure, and ideally a confident canine role model.

Lazarus deserves a home that understands him — one that sees his deafness not as a limitation, but as just one part of who he is. With consistency, calm handling, and the right environment, he will be an extraordinarily loyal and loving companion.
