Luna came to us after being surrendered to the local pound. Mentally, she was in a very bad way, her anxiety was extreme and we were faced with the possibility that she wasn’t going to be able to be rehoused.
We started her on medications for her anxiety and had a behaviour consult to ensure we did everything we could for her.
It’s been a long road, though Luna is now able to start looking for her forever home.
Let’s keep this short and to the point…..
-Luna doesn’t cope on her own so MUST go to a home with another dog. Ideally a confident dog as Luna will feed off another dog’s anxiety. If you don’t have a dog, don’t apply!
-She loves going for a walk, though does still pull on the lead and will bark at other dogs on walks.
-We have been unsuccessful at crate training her, she doesn’t like being confined and unable to get to you.
-Luna isn’t a fan of trips in the car though copes with short car rides.
-She is a typical dachshund and will bark if she hears something unfamiliar or when someone comes to the house.
-Luna has been fine outside with a doggy companion during the day when her carer is at work and has slept both inside and outside since being in care. (She makes this decision)
-Luna appears to be toilet trained.
-She is great with confident cats.
-She loves a cuddle and snoozing next to you on the couch.
-Luna needs consistency and routine in her life and she doesn’t cope well with change.
-She can be cautious of people she doesn’t know and the more you want to be her friend the more she will back off. Ignoring her and letting her make the decision is key to her becoming your friend. If you give her a little time, it doesn’t take long.
-She needs a family who will have rules, be consistent and not baby her, as this only increases her anxiety.
-She LOVES soft toys, especially ones that squeak!
-Luna requires daily anxiety medication which will be ongoing.
Luna is a very smart little dog who is a pleasure to have around, she just needs time to settle, learn your routine and have her daily meds.
If you’re looking for a little dog to be your shadow, follow you everywhere (including the bathroom), keep you company when in the garden and just be with you, then Luna is your girl. She has her quirks, at times can be difficult and she needs ongoing training to help with her anxiety, though you will be rewarded with unconditional love.
We also strongly recommend she continues having behaviour consults to help you continue to help her.
