About Buddy
🐾 Meet Buddy – A Gentle Senior Soul Looking for a Soft Place to Land
Buddy is a sweet senior gentleman who came into care after his beloved owner was hospitalised and could no longer care for him. Despite this sudden change, Buddy remains a trusting, affectionate boy who simply wants to be close to his people.
He is cuddly, gentle, a little sassy, and sometimes nervous — the kind of dog who bonds deeply with “his person” and finds his greatest joy curled up beside you on the couch. His favourite thing in the world is sleeping beside you and soaking up head and back pats.
Buddy is fully house-trained and has lovely manners indoors. He sleeps happily in the main living area, either on his special blanket or on the couch, and settles well into home routines. He knows the commands sit, come, settle and away, and he respects boundaries and baby gates even when he could easily push past them. He walks nicely on lead and enjoys gentle strolls of around 15–30 minutes, although he may pull a little when he recognises home or forgets about road boundaries, which is easily managed with calm handling. He also enjoys having access to a yard where he can wander, sunbathe and self-exercise.
With people, Buddy can be a little cautious at first. When he feels unsure, he may shake or cower briefly and will seek reassurance from someone he trusts. Once he feels safe, he warms up beautifully and often becomes very affectionate. He does best when allowed to approach in his own time and responds extremely well to gentle encouragement and patience. In calm environments he is very settled, though he can become nervous in large crowds. Rainy weather can also make him a little unsettled, but he is not reactive to loud noises such as fireworks, traffic, vacuum cleaners, bikes or general household sounds.
Buddy is wonderfully easygoing with other animals. He has lived peacefully with both a dog and a cat and shows no prey drive or reactivity. He has grown up with other pets and has always been described as non-aggressive and socially appropriate. He has no food aggression and shares space politely.
He can be left alone for short periods of up to three to four hours, but he much prefers company and may bark or howl if left too long. For this reason, Buddy would be happiest in a home where someone is around most of the time. A quiet, relaxed household would suit him best, such as with older adopters, a calm adult home, or someone who works from home.
Buddy is on pain relief for arthritis and hip displaysia and will require this going forward. His xrays can be shared with a potential adopter's vet. He is toilet trained, eating well, and coping nicely in care.
Buddy has already experienced a lot of change and loss in his senior years. What he needs now is stability, kindness and a soft place to land. In return, he will offer gentle companionship, deep loyalty and the kind of quiet love that only an older dog can give.
