About Digby
Meet Digby 🐶
Digby is a sweet, young Belgian Shepherd Mix pup, born on 16 June 2025. He weighs about 15 kgs and is around the same size as a cattle dog of the same age. He will not be a large dog.
Digby can be a bit timid at first, but once he feels safe and comfortable, he loves to show you his playful personality. He has had a lot of change in his short life so a patient and gentle approach is essential to gaining his trust.
He’s a happy dog at heart and loves being around his humans. He’s become best friends with his foster family’s mature male dog and derives a lot of confidence and learning from him. An impressionable pup, Digby will often observe and copy what the resident dog does, highlighting the benefit of him having a sensible canine mate in his new home.
He is very good around horses, sheep, goats and chickens.
Although Digby enjoys boisterous play, he knows when it is time to settle down. He is responsive to firm boundaries and this should make training easier. Digby is just starting his training journey and is learning basic cues like sit and lie down.
His recall is very impressive for a young dog.
He’s learning to walk nicely on the lead and is improving each day. When dogs rush up to fences as he walks past with his foster family, he can be a little startled — but he has shown no reactivity or aggression. With calm reassurance, his confidence continues to grow.
He enjoys chewing, which is normal puppy behaviour, so a secure, puppy-proof yard with lots of toys will be important. He’s not naughty, just young and still learning the rules.
Having a confident canine companion could help him continue to build confidence and learn appropriate social cues.
In the past, Digby has shown wonderful gentleness with a 5-year-old child and with visitors, taking a polite, respectful approach when meeting people. He has only recently begun barking at unfamiliar noises and is generally a quiet boy.
He does seem a little cautious at mealtimes — possibly reflecting past experiences, however, has shown no aggression. He often needs encouragement to finish his meals although has a great appetite for snacks and treats.
Toilet training has been coming along well, but may need fine tuning in a new environment.
Digby’s Ideal Home 🏡
• An adopter who understands his breed and needs
• Someone patient, calm, and willing to let Digby build confidence at his own pace
• A home committed to ongoing, positive training and gentle guidance
• A secure yard where typical puppy behaviours like digging and chewing can be managed
• Plenty of time, reassurance and love to help him continue to grow and settle
• Another well-mannered, calm dog would be greatly beneficial
Digby is offered for adoption under a Deferred Desexing Agreement. This means he will go to his new home undesexed, on the clear understanding that he is not to be bred and will be desexed when age-appropriate. His adoption fee includes the cost of desexing, subject to the terms and conditions of the agreement.
