About Blaze and Mabel
Blaze 12 years & Mabel 11 Red & Black and Tan Smooth miniature Dachshunds
BLAZE
Blaze is the confident “leader of the pack,” a bright, loyal, and loving little character. He adores “hunting” in the garden and enjoys nothing more than curling up beside his favourite human for a long nap. Blaze especially loves having his ears rubbed and will happily lick your feet for “foot massages.”
He is crate trained, happily sleeping through the night in his crate alongside Mabel. This consistency has always given both dogs a sense of security, especially when others have looked after them. Blaze may occasionally bark during the night to go outside, but this is rare.
When unsupervised indoors, Blaze may mark with urine, so it’s best he’s left outside or in his crate when alone. He doesn’t like being left alone for very long periods but is fine for up to 4–5 hours.
Blaze is typical of his breed — he will bark to alert you but responds well when told to settle. He’s good on a lead and has very good recall in controlled, familiar environments. On outings, he should remain on lead as he may try to “protect” his humans from strangers or other dogs.
Blaze gets along well with other dogs (when introduced calmly) and cats if introduce properly. untested with children. He is extremely food-motivated and thrives on routine. Portion control is essential to maintain a healthy weight.
Thrive on routine and someone being home most of the time
Enjoy secure outdoor areas to explore and lounge in the sun
Ideal Home
Blaze and Mabel are best suited to a quiet, adult home — ideally a retired single man or woman or couple with plenty of time to spend with them. They are loving, loyal, and gentle companions who seek company and routine.
Mabel
Mabel is a sweet, sensitive soul who adores slow, gentle affection. She has an interesting look of perpetual “worry,” but she’s actually a very happy dog and incredibly loving once she feels secure. Her favourite thing in the world is a calm cuddle or a slow, deep massage. Someone experienced with dachshunds who understands some individuals have a more nervous disposition would be great for Mabel is a scavenger and must be watched closely on walks to ensure she doesn’t eat something harmful.
Mabel gains weight easily, so her diet must be carefully controlled, and it’s best not to give in to her “puppy eyes.” She’s very treat-motivated but can be over-eager, sometimes snatching food.
Mabel’s recall isn’t as reliable as Blaze’s.
Both dogs use a doggy door confidently and will alert you to go outside. Blaze will vocalize or go to the door, while Mabel’s cue is pacing or restlessness.
Their Ideal Home
Blaze and Mabel have always lived together and are deeply bonded. They are best suited to a quiet, adult household, ideally a retired single man or woman or couple who are home most of the time, or possibly a WFH person/couple. They are not used to being left alone for long days and would not thrive in a busy home.
They have lived on acreage and are used to having secure outdoor space to explore, though they adapt well to smaller, safe yards. They enjoy daily routines, companionship, and lots of affection.
Both are crate trained, toilet trained and accustomed to household life. Their large crate serves as their safe space — invaluable for travel, visitors, or overnight stays elsewhere.
They are wonderful little companions, full of love, personality, and quirks. They have been the heart of our family for many years.
