About Marlow
Meet Marlow – A Big-Hearted Young Hound Looking for His Perfect Match
Marlow is a handsome, affectionate young hound currently in our care, and we believe he is an Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound. He has a beautiful nature, absolutely loves his humans, and has a way of winning hearts almost instantly. While he has matured significantly since coming into care, we’re committed to being honest about the type of home he needs.
The wonderful news is that Marlow has made enormous progress. With maturity, ongoing training, and appropriate behavioural medication prescribed by his veterinarian, he is now a much calmer, more settled dog than when he first arrived. He is learning to regulate his excitement, and while he can still become over-aroused at times, these moments are becoming less frequent and much easier to manage.
Marlow is still a young working-breed dog who missed out on important foundations as a puppy. He continues to mouth occasionally, particularly when he becomes excited or is seeking attention, so he needs an experienced, confident owner who understands how to redirect this behaviour calmly and consistently. Harsh corrections are not the answer—clear boundaries, structure, and positive reinforcement are.
For this reason, Marlow is looking for an active, experienced home with adults or dog-savvy teenagers. He is not suited to a home with young children.
Marlow has achieved so much during his time in care. He knows sit, wait, down, shake, and “bed”, and earlier this year completed a five-day board-and-train program with respected behaviourist George Tran, who also provides lifetime support for Marlow’s adopters. He is highly food-motivated, intelligent, and genuinely enjoys learning. Give this boy a job and he’ll happily throw himself into it.
He is fully toilet trained with a consistent routine and is crate trained, happily using his crate as a safe place to relax and switch off whenever he chooses.
Like most hounds, Marlow needs both physical exercise and mental stimulation. Daily walks, enrichment activities, scent work, puzzle toys, training sessions, and interactive play are all important to keeping him happy and balanced. He especially loves fetch, tug games, swimming, and anything that allows him to use his nose.
Marlow absolutely loves other dogs. His dream home would include a calm, well-balanced, placid canine companion who is happy to tolerate his enthusiastic puppy antics while gently teaching him appropriate dog manners. He responds beautifully to good canine role models and would benefit enormously from having a confident, patient dog to learn from. His play style can still be boisterous, so any resident dog needs to be tolerant, social, and secure enough not to be overwhelmed by his youthful exuberance.
He has also lived successfully around confident, dog-savvy cats and has shown himself to be very relaxed around horses.
More than anything, Marlow adores being with his people. He isn’t a dog who wants to spend his life in the backyard—he wants to be where his family is. Whether you’re watching TV, working from home, cooking dinner, or relaxing after a busy day, Marlow simply wants to be part of it all. His forever home must be one where he lives as an inside dog, sharing everyday life with his family and enjoying plenty of companionship. Once his exercise and enrichment needs have been met, he transforms into an affectionate cuddle bug who happily curls up beside you on the couch and loves a bedtime snuggle.
Marlow isn’t a perfect dog—but he is an incredibly rewarding one. He needs someone who sees his potential, understands that progress is a journey, and is prepared to continue building on the fantastic foundations that have already been laid.
In return, you’ll gain an intelligent, loyal, funny, and deeply loving companion who will repay your commitment many times over. We have fallen in love with him but sadly cannot adopt him.
If you’re an experienced, active home looking for a dog to share life’s adventures with—and you’re willing to continue guiding this wonderful young hound into adulthood—Marlow may just be the perfect addition to your family.
Marlow will be on a foster to adopt contract initially to ensure the best fit for both him and you.
Medical notes
Marlow is currently on calming medication however it is not expected to be a long term requirement - to date the medication is helping him immensely and enabling him to relax and better focus on learning
