Meet Avenue,
Avenue is a gentle, sweet-natured young dog who’s come a long way since arriving in care. While he can still be a little shy or timid at times, he’s made wonderful progress and is now much more confident than when he first came in. Because of this, Avenue would be best suited to experienced owners, ideally those who have had some experience with shy dogs and understand how to support them as they continue to grow in confidence.
He’s actually quite an easy-going boy and would be suitable to live in any household environment, though a calm and quiet home would suit him best. That said, Avenue would also be a great match for active people or families — his exercise needs aren’t demanding, but he does enjoy getting out and about and joining in on daily activities.
Being young, Avenue has a playful and excitable side and is very social with both people and other dogs. He’s agreeable, friendly, happy, and loves interacting with those around him. Once he’s comfortable, his affectionate nature really shines through. Avenue is a lovely mix of gentle soul and playful youngster, ready to keep building confidence with the right people by his side.
Ideal Home: Avenue is best to live in either a standalone home or farm/acerage, with a medium to large yard and high, secure fencing.
Family: Avenue is open to meet kids of any age, as long as they are dog savvy.
Avenue is fine to live with people who work full-time hours, or with someone who is home more often than not. He is able to spend time in the yard on his own, but would like the opportunity to be inside with his new family on occasion too.
Furry Friends: Avenue is dog social - he's keen to interact, engage and play - he's made a lot of dog friends while he has been with us. He is young, so plays like a puppy - group classes would be ideal to ensure that he learns manners when playing and meeting other dogs. Other than that, he'd be a great friend for another dog who doesn't mind a bit of rough housing.
As we cannot test in this environment, we are unsure how Avenue would be living with cats/pocket pets. This would up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Avenue would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. Group classes would be good for Avenue so that he can not only extend on the skills he already has but also gain more confidence when around other dogs. Avenue may jump up on you for cuddle and a pat but he usually only does this when you first meet him.
Avenue is still learning his name, but he knows commands such as "sit".
He is food motivated, so having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would still be an excellent idea. He also takes treats from you gently.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Avenue has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise or walks from 20-30mins a day to keep him healthy and content. Avenue likes all sorts of toys - he likes chew or rubber toys and also enjoys sitting and splashing in his shell pool.
Avenue walks well on lead with some minor pulling. He usually walks well, but if he feels nervous he may suddenly stop - some words of encouragement go along way with him when this happens. He is able to be walked on any apparatus.
Staff Comments: Avenue is a very sweet and affectionate boy who likes to smooch. Still somewhat young, so he is learning to be confident. He loves people and his personality is starting to come out - in other words, he's a bit of a dork...

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
