About Koki
Meet Koki, a delightful Maltese cross who is on the lookout for his forever home
. Koki is a spirited little fellow with a zest for life. He is an energetic and playful dog who finds joy in chasing after his soft toys or doing zoomies around the backyard. Koki is a happy-go-lucky chap, always ready for a new adventure, but he is also in need of a special home where he can feel safe and loved. Koki has had a challenging past, particularly with children who were not always gentle with him, leading to some trauma. As a result, he can be a bit nervous when touched unexpectedly. Therefore, he requires an experienced owner who can understand his body language and provide the comfort and reassurance he needs. Despite these challenges, Koki is generally a cheerful dog who loves going for walks, enjoying car rides, and having playtime with his human companions. He is a small dog who is gradually gaining confidence in a home environment, learning that people can indeed be calm, predictable, and kind. With patience and understanding, Koki reveals a gentle and affectionate side that is truly heartwarming.
Koki has a few favorite activities that bring him immense joy: Going walks where he can explore his surroundings at his own pace. Receiving treats and food rewards, which are great motivators for him. Sitting on laps for short periods once he feels comfortable and secure. Playing or simply relaxing on his mat, enjoying his own little space. Having a quiet corner all to himself where he can retreat and feel safe. Interaction with Humans Koki is a dog who thrives on companionship once trust is established. He is affectionate and enjoys being around people, but he prefers gentle and predictable interactions. He does best when allowed to approach on his own terms, and he is becoming more comfortable with touch as time goes on. However, he can feel overwhelmed if handled suddenly, especially when he is resting. Respecting his boundaries is crucial in helping him feel safe and relaxed. Koki can sometimes be protective of his space, particularly around his bed, so it is recommended to place his bed in a quiet corner where he can rest undisturbed. He will need his own bed and should NOT sleep on yours, as sudden movements can startle him.
Koki is making steady progress with reward-based training. He is eager to learn and responds well to positive reinforcement. Currently, he is learning or has mastered the following commands: Sit, Stay, Come here, In / Out, On your mat, Paw/Hand He walks well on a lead, maintaining a steady pace, and is a joy to take on walks.
Koki is generally neutral toward other dogs. During walks, he may show curiosity and occasionally pull slightly toward other dogs, but he quickly settles and continues walking without any issues. He prefers calm interactions and may feel uncomfortable and bark if another dog is too energetic. He has been introduced to one of our calm rescue dogs and was happy to hang out with him. However, Koki is looking for a home where he can be the only dog, as he thrives in a one-on-one environment. Independence Koki is comfortable spending time on his own and can self-settle when given a quiet space. While he enjoys companionship, he does not require constant attention and is content with having some alone time.
Koki is a good eater and is motivated by food, which aids in his training and confidence-building. Following his dental work, he has tolerated soft food well and grazes on high-quality kibble throughout the day. It is important to give Koki space while he enjoys his meals, as he can become grumpy if he feels his food is threatened.
Hygiene and Grooming Bathing is still a work in progress for Koki. He currently tolerates having his paws washed using treats and running water, but full bathing will need to be introduced slowly and gently at his pace, as he is not a fan. He has been groomed before, but it was quite distressing for him, so sedation may be necessary to help keep him calm during grooming sessions. He definitely does not like the drier or the clippers at all and scissors near his face is also a huge dislike
Koki prefers a quiet, secure sleeping area, such as a bed in the corner or laundry room. He benefits from having a designated resting space where he is not disturbed, allowing him to feel safe and secure. Car Travel Koki is an excellent traveler and settles easily during car trips. He enjoys the journey and is a well-behaved passenger.
Koki enjoys daily walks at a steady pace, and his walking distance has been gradually increasing. He shows excitement before outings and loves to sniff around, taking in all the scents. Koki also loves chasing his ball and playing tug, which are great ways for him to burn off energy and have fun. Inside the Home Indoors, Koki is calm and settles well when routines and boundaries are consistent. He enjoys being near people but also values having his own space where he can relax and feel comfortable
. Medical Information Koki has been desexed, vaccinated, and has undergone a dental procedure where 18 teeth were removed. His anal glands have been expressed by the vet,
Ideal Home Koki would thrive in a calm, adult-only home with dog-savvy adults. His previous home environment included very young children, which appeared to be overwhelming for him, so a quieter household where his boundaries are respected will help him feel secure. With patience, gentle handling, and a predictable routine, Koki has the potential to be a loyal and affectionate companion. He would love a little yard where he can still do his zoomies and enjoy the outdoors. A home without children and one that is willing to give him the time and space to settle in and feel comfortable with his environment would be ideal for Koki.
