About Mittens
Mittens is the perfect reminder to never judge a book by its cover.
At first glance, Mittens may greet you with a classic, sassy tortie hiss, which is her way of saying, "I'm overwhelmed, please give me a minute!" But don't be fooled. Once she realises you're a friend, this girl softens beautifully with gentle handling. Underneath that tough-girl act is a sweet, social cat who is simply scared in the loud, busy shelter environment.
Mittens was surrendered to us, so we know she's been a much-loved pet before. Unfortunately, life in a busy home with lots of children was just too overwhelming for her. In true tortie fashion, she's decided that having kids is not part of her life plan - and she's hoping her next home will be a little quieter and more predictable.
Like all cats, she'll need time and space to settle in at her own pace. Starting her in a small, quiet room helps her feel safe. Keep handling light and let her choose when she's ready for affection. Slow introductions, predictable routines, soft voices, cosy hidey spots, yummy treats, these are the things that will help her confidence grow.
Our staff have been working on helping Mittens grow her confidence while in care and we look forward to the day when we get to see some at-home updates of her looking like the confident, happy cat we know she wants to be.
Mittens is part of our Rescue or Rehome program, where we are committed to finding homes for cats and kittens who simply cannot cope in the shelter environment.
