Meet Pete,
Pete is a sweet, sensitive soul who’s ready to blossom with the right people by his side.
Pete is best suited to experienced owners, especially those who understand how to support friendly but timid dogs. A calm and quiet home will help him feel safe while he settles in, allowing his gentle nature to shine through.
This lovely boy is soft-hearted, a little shy, and can be timid at first — but give him time, and you’ll see just how friendly, happy, and affectionate he can be. Pete can show some anxious behaviours, but he’s manageable, and with patient guidance he continues to grow and learn every day.
He’s also excitable and social, especially when he gets the chance to mingle with other dogs. In fact, Pete seems to gain a lot of confidence when he has canine friends around, and he tends to prefer the company of larger dogs over smaller ones.
If you’re looking for a gentle, sensitive dog who just needs a steady, understanding home to truly thrive, Pete might be the perfect match. With the right support, he’s sure to become an incredibly rewarding addition to your life.
Ideal Home: Pete is suitable to live in an property type, yard size is of no concern either, just as long as the fencing is high and secure.
Family: Pete is open to meet kids of any age - despite his moments of timidity he is gentle and very mild mannered and would do well with dog savvy children.
Pete is fine to live with people who work full-time hours, as he shows no signs of separation anxiety. He is able to spend time in the yard on his own, but would also like to be inside with his new family on occasion, too.
Furry Friends: Pete appears to be dog selective. He can walk around other dogs without issue, and he appears to gain more confidence being around other dogs. He is hesitant to walk unless with another dog, and is conflicted with his approach - he wants to interact, but his lack of confidence holds him back. Once he is feeling more confident and comfortable he will offer play bows and will interact, but he is also able to break away and do his own thing. If going home with another dog, he will need a dog that is gentle as he is still learning how to play.
As we cannot test in this environment, we are unsure how Pete would be living with cats/pocket pets. This would up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Pete would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. He would also benefit from group classes so that he can continue to learn how to interact with other dogs. With additional training and confidence boosting Pete could be the type of dog that you could take to a dog friendly café or social event. Leash training should also be included in his training.
Pete is still learning his name, but he knows commands such as 'sit'.
He is food motivated, so having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would still be an excellent idea. Pete is usually gentle when taking treats but can at times be a little snatchy.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Pete has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise or walks from 20-30mins every other day to keep him healthy and content. Pete does play with toys - he likes soft toys. He also likes to go for walks, or simply likes being near you and being around other, larger dogs.
Pete isn't the best when it comes to walks, he dislikes lead pressure and will stop walking if pushed - he walks best when around another dog. He is best to be walked on a harness to mitigate lead pressure.
Staff Comments: Pete is a sweet, little guy. He needs confidence building and lead work incorporated into his training. He is navigating a whole new life and he is doing well with us, but his training will need to continue in his new home. He has so much potential and we cannot wait to see him thrive.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
