Meet Ralph! This handsome young guy has come all the way from Mornington Island - he turned up at the local school as a skinny stray and was cared for by the teachers until they left. Now he is safe in care with NQAR!
This attention loving young fellow still thinks he's a puppy who can curl up on your lap, but is starting to respect consistent boundaries. He will be your constant shadow, following whereever you go and loves a car trip where he can have the wind in his face.
Typical of any young dog, he loves a chew but can sometimes mistake your arm for a toy when he's a bit excited, so lots of different chew toys is a must through this stage and would probably do better with a home without young children. He's mastered the sit, with a short stay which is increasing with consistent training. He is inquisitive, so is easily distracted by grasshoppers or bugs, but yummy liver treats get his attention. As with any young dog, consistent boundaries and structured training will help him grow into the best dog he can be.
Ralph is perfectly crate trained and is pretty good at toilet training, as long as he's reminded to go outside with a little walk, or he will forget because he's too busy loving being your shadow. He loves a zoomie in the morning but is respectful of sleep ins and won't bother you until you're up. Not recommended to be around other small animals, as he does give chase to a bush turkey or bandicoot.
Ralphie will be a wonderful addition to a home with a human close by if he is to be an only dog, or he will be great as a companion to another dog as he's very social. We think he would benefit from an older, well behaved doggy companion from whom he could learn to model good boy behaviour.
After a rough start in life, this affectionate lad is ready to find is happily ever after!
Ralph is $350 to adopt and comes desexed, microchipped, C5 vaccinated, heartworm tested (negative), and given flea/tick/worm prevention.
If you would like to meet Ralph, please email adopt@nqar.org.au.
Medical notes
Ralph's left foot turns out, which is a sign of a short ulna bone and most likely the cause of his previous limp. Although he bears full weight on it now, it is recommended to keep him on fish oil/joint support supplements.
