Meet Walnut,
Walnut is an easy going and adaptable dog who’d fit beautifully into any home - whether you’re a first-time dog owner or have plenty of experience. She’d make a wonderful match for active people or families who love to get out and about - but her exercise needs are not demanding.
She can be a little shy when meeting new people, but once she’s had a moment to warm up, her friendly, playful, and social nature shines through. Walnut loves engaging with her humans, whether it’s joining in on a game, exploring new sights and smells, or just being part of the fun.
Affectionate, curious, and full of happy energy, Walnut is ready to wiggle her way into your heart — and your everyday adventures!
Ideal Home: Walnut is best suited to live in a town house or standalone home, with a medium to large sized yard and high secure fencing.
Family: Walnut is open to meet kids from 6 years and up - reason for this is due to her initial timidity around new people, and once she's comfy she may accidently knock smaller children over as she loves to give you cuddles.
She is fine to live with people who work full-time hours as she shows no signs of separation anxiety. She is able to spend time in the yard on her own, but would also love to be inside with her new family too.
Furry Friends: Walnut is dog selective. She can be walked around other dogs without any issues but doesn't rely on the other dog for companionship. She is able to do short, controlled interactions and when she is done she will just do her own thing. She'll show moments of playful behaviour, but it's like she is still learning how to play. With dogs she's not fond of, she'll rarely interact or initiate play, and will stick to doing her own thing. With further socialisation we feel that Walnut could make dog friends but this it a process without time limits and will need to continue in her new home. We'd prefer Walnut to go to a home without other dogs.
As we cannot test in this environment, we are unsure how Walnut would go living with/meeting cats and pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of her new owners.
Training & Development: Walnut would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. Walnut is mild mannered but may jump on you when she gets excited. Further socialisation with other dogs would benefit her, also. With ongoing training and time to settle into a new routine, Walnut could be the kind of dog that you could take to a dog friendly café or social setting.
Walnut knows her name, and she also knows commands such as 'sit'.
Walnut is food motivated - so having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would be an excellent idea as she is very responsive to them. She is gentle when taking treats from you, too.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Walnut has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 30-60mins every day to keep her happy and healthy. Walnut likes to play with toys, she likes all toys - especially tennis balls. She likes to be around people, go for walks, be included in what you're doing and adores personal play with her handlers.
Walnut walks well on lead mostly, only with minimal pulling sometimes. She is fine to be walked on a lead and collar or martingale.
Staff Comments: Walnut is an affectionate girl but needs a little time to warm up to new people. She loves laying on your lap and would make a great lap dog, or couch potato. Walnut is calm in her kennel but can be a little on edge when walking around near other dogs. However, she is improving and her socialisation training is helping with her lack of confidence around other dog.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
