Meet Sookie,
Sookie is a gentle soul who’s looking for a home that understands her sensitive nature. She’s best suited to experienced owners who have patience and empathy for dogs that can be shy or timid, especially in new environments.
Sookie feels most at ease in a calm and quiet home where she can take her time to build trust and confidence. Once she’s comfortable, her true personality blossoms — she becomes curious, playful, and even a little cheeky at times.
Sookie loves spending time with people she knows and will happily follow you around, offering soft nudges for affection or curling up nearby to be close. She enjoys getting out for walks and exploring, making her a wonderful match for an active person or family who can offer both stimulation and downtime.
With gentle guidance and consistency, Sookie will reward you with her loyalty, affection, and a bond that runs deep.
Ideal Home: Sookie is best suited to live in a town house or standalone home, with a medium to large sized yard and high secure fencing.
Family: Sookie is open to meet kids from 8 years and up - reason for this is due to her timidity, she can get a little scared of strange sounds and sudden movements.
She is fine to live with people who work full-time hours as she shows no signs of separation anxiety. She is able to spend time in the yard on her own, but would also love to be inside with her new family too.
Furry Friends: Sookie is best to be the only dog in the home. She can be walked around other dogs without any issues and she is able to do short, controlled interactions, she just lacks a lot of confidence, especially if the other dog is too playful for her. She seems best suited to dogs who are calm and similar to her in nature. With further socialisation and desensitisation we feel that Sookie could make dog friends but this it a process without time limits and will need to continue in her new home.
As we cannot test in this environment, we are unsure how Sookie would go living with/meeting cats and pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of her new owners.
Training & Development: Sookie would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. Sookie is mild mannered and rarely jumps up on you. Further socialisation with other dogs would benefit her, also.
Sookie is still learning her name, but she responds to your voice. She is also still learning commands, but she is eager to learn which is most important.
Sookie is food motivated - so having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would be an excellent idea as she is very responsive to them. She is gentle when taking treats from you, too.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Sookie has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 30-60mins every day to keep her happy and healthy. Sookie is not interested in playing with toys - she prefers to be around people, go for walks, be included in what you're doing and adores personal play with her handlers.
Sookie walks well on lead mostly, only with minimal pulling sometimes. She is fine to be walked on a lead and collar or martingale.
Staff Comments: Sookie is very sweet and affectionate, although she can be initially shy when you first meet her. Sookie doesn't know any commands so she will be starting from scratch. She's a gentle, sweet and lovely girl who would do so well in the right home with the right owners who want to help her grow.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
