Meet Toby,
Toby is a classic husky through and through — confident, independent, and a little bit stubborn when it suits him. He’s best matched with experienced owners, particularly those familiar with the husky breed and their strong-willed personality.
When Toby first arrived, he was a bit anxious, but he’s since settled in well and shown his true self — a gentle, self-assured boy who enjoys human company on his own terms. He can be social and friendly, though he’s equally content to do his own thing.
True to his breed, Toby isn’t always in a rush to please and may prefer to take his time when it comes to new requests or directions. He also has a relaxed side and doesn’t mind a lazy day now and then.
Toby is on the larger side for a husky due to some overfeeding in his previous home. While he’s not on a strict diet, his new home will need to continue his healthy eating plan to help him reach an ideal weight. Interestingly, he’s not very food motivated — unless wet food is on offer!
If you appreciate a dog with character, confidence, and that signature husky attitude, Toby might be the one for you.
Ideal Home: Toby is suitable to live in a standalone home or on a farm/acerage, with a medium to large yard, and high secure fencing.
Family: Toby is open to meet kids of any age - but kids in the home should be dog savvy as he is large and in charge and may knock smaller kids over.
Toby is fine to live with people who work full-time hours as he shows no signs of separation anxiety. He is independent and able to spend time in the yard on his own, but on occasion would also like to be inside with his new family.
Furry Friends: Toby is dog selective. During his dog assessment he was very independent - he was able to be around the other dog, but was most happy to do his own thing. Like all huskies, he was vocal during his assessment which some dogs might not like. Although he did not play with the other dog, he was able to interact, exchange sniffs, and be around the other dog with no issues. He previously lived with another dog (Mishka) although when they interact, they interact as though they have never met before. He's very autonomous and doesn't rely on the companionship of another dog to feel content.
As we cannot test in this environment, we are unable to test if Toby would be suitable to live with cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Toby would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience.
Toby is still learning his name (or maybe he does know his name but is aloof?) Toby also knows commands such as sit and shake and he also appears to be toilet trained.
He isn't very food motivated - but having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would still be a good idea. When he does take treats, he is gentle when doing so. He appears to like devon.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Despite his size, Toby has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise or walks from 20-30mins a day to keep him healthy and content. Due to his breed, exercise first thing in the morning or later in the evening would be ideal. Toby doesn't play with toys, he prefers to go for walks or is content doing his own thing.
Toby walks well on lead with some pulling. He is best to be walked on either a martingale or collar and lead. Loose lead training should be incorporated into his usual training regime.
Staff Comments: Toby can get a little stressed in his kennel, but once you get to know him, you’ll see he’s a true Husky — independent, a little aloof, and occasionally stubborn. He enjoys interacting with people in his own way and keeps a calm, even-tempered demeanour most of the time. He’s selective with other dogs and doesn’t need a canine friend to feel content, preferring to do his own thing. Toby is quite a relaxed boy, a bit vocal at times, and would make an easy-going, low-maintenance house mate for the right person.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
