Meet Sawyer
Sawyer is a gentle boy who’s looking for an experienced owner, preferably someone familiar with his breed, to help him continue building his confidence. He’s best suited to a calm and quiet home where he can feel safe and secure. Unlike many JRTs, Sawyer isn’t a whirlwind of energy – instead, he’s a relaxed boy who walks beautifully on lead and would make a wonderful walking buddy.
Sensitive and shy at first, Sawyer is friendly, agreeable, and very smart. He’s curious about the world around him and once he feels comfortable, his affectionate and engaging nature shines through. Easy-going and sweet, Sawyer is ready to find a family who will give him the patience and love he deserves as he continues to blossom.
Ideal Home: Sawyer is fine to live in any property type, and yard size is of no concern either - just as long as the yard is fully fence, with high, secure fencing.
Family: Sawyer is open to meet kids from 10 years and up. Reason for this is because Sawyer is a timid little guy - he would do well in a home where kids are older as they are more understanding of his needs.
Sawyer is fine to live with people who work full-time hours as he shows no signs of separation anxiety - however he is a clingy dog, as he loves being near you and by your side. He is able to spend time in the yard on his own, but would also like to be inside with his new family too. He is the kind of dog who could live in the home full time, however he is not yet toilet trained.
Furry Friends: Sawyer is dog selective/best to be the only dog in the home. During his dog assessment he was able to walk around/walk with other dogs but he is not overly interactive with them. He shows very minimal playful traits but tends to withdraw if the other dog is too playful. He doesn't rely on the other dog for companionship but he will need further training to desensitise himself from other dogs and also confidence building.
As we cannot test in this environment, we are unsure how Sawyer would go living with/meeting cats and pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners. However, based on his breed, he may not be suited to live with cats.
Training & Development: Sawyer would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. Crate training would be great for Sawyer because he can be a little clingy with you - this is because he loves being around people - but crate training will ensure that his current behaviour doesn't escalate into separation anxiety. Training to help him boost his confidence and desensitise him to other dogs would be beneficial too.
With additional training, and time to settle into a new routine, Sawyer could be the type of dog that you could take to a dog friendly café or social event.
Sawyer is still learning his name, but he knows how to sit and beg.
He is food motivated - but takes some time to take treats from you - he is gentle when taking treats from you, once he feels comfortable enough.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Sawyer has mid-range energy needs, although he isn't as energetic as what is deemed 'normal' for his breed. He would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 20-30mins every other day to keep him healthy and content. Texas doesn't really show interest in playing with toys, however this could change once he is settled into his new home. He also likes to go for walks, meet other dogs and loves personal play with his handlers, cuddles and being near you.
Sawyers walks beautifully on lead with no pulling at all. He is able to be walked on any apparatus.
Staff Comments: Sawyer is a very sweet and loving dog who absolutely loves butt scratches - he backs that booty into you for more! He can sometimes get a little clingy, but isn't needy - he just likes being around you. Crate training would be beneficial so that this behaviour doesn't escalate into separation anxiety.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
The adoption fee for dogs covers C5 vaccination, health check, heartworm testing, desexing, micro-chipping, and registration.
