About Captain Hook
A few months ago, a handful of pigeon rescue volunteers came together to help catch a poor pigeon with a very severe case of stringfoot. It was quite nasty and obviously very tender and infected. It needed to go! When the clinic asked for a name, we didn’t have one yet. But on the spot the nurse and us came up with the name Captain Hook because very soon he will have lost his limb similar to his fictional namesake!
Debridement of his wounds revealed big chunks of pus and necrotic tissue, and we even found one of his missing feet in there as well! Unfortunately Xrays showed that his strung-up toes were also affected by a cancer/tumour, so we decided to amputate further up the leg. Captain Hook deserved a second chance in a place where he will be loved.
2 months on, Captain is thriving on one leg! And has proven to be quite the fun character also. Captain likes people, and enjoying chatting away at you and fanning out his tail.
Captain Hook would love to live either in a home indoors with a modified setup for his feet (which isn’t hard to make at all!) or in an aviary that has also been customised for special needs.
Medical notes
It was suspected that there was a tumour in Captain’s leg which might have been cancerous in nature. Captain has had blood tests to confirm he is in great condition, and has been vet assessed and no other cancer-concerns have been raised. It is likely it was an isolated tumour, and as so much of the leg had been removed, there is no more left.
Captain Hook will need a modified cage setup to help support him on one leg, this is most often lining the floor and perched with a soft yoga mat, and putting soft bedding on top of that like fleece or towels. Please reach out for more info adoptions@frecklesfellowship.org
