Gambit has the typical staffy personality: She loves cuddles from her humans as much as she loves to snooze in her bed.
She is a champion snorer who will meet you with a gift of a slipper or ball when you arrive home. If you don’t give her enough pats though, she will sit across the room giving you the Staffy side eye and little woofs to remind you.
Gambit is a strong unit, who often thinks that she is the size of a lapdog, rather than a dog with the dexterity of a hippo chasing a toy ball.
At home she is great. Low maintenance, has great bladder control and has learned several commands. She sleeps well overnight in the living room on her bed without being needy. If someone comes close to the front door of our home, she will bark and go for a sniff, then return to her bed once knowing that all is safe.
So far Gambit has learned several verbal commands and knows to sit before going in through the front door. She has also learned to sit and wait to be told yes before eating her food. She will bring her toy ball to you and happily chase it back and forth around the house. Similarly she loves to wrestle and play tug of war, in which she has been learning the adequate level of physical play. Gambit has been great with guests at home, quickly warming to family and friends for pats.
Being outside in public is a whole new experience for Gambit though. She has had a big transition into foster care. Previously she lived in a caravan and has been kept mostly as an indoor dog until her owner passed away.
She has since found herself adjusting to being in an urban environment, with many strange sounds, sights and smells that she has never encountered before.
As a result Gambit needs an owner who can be patient with her as she slowly gets used to being outside and learning to walk on a lead. She has made huge steps of progress in foster care, to the point that she enjoys being outdoors, has learned to sit outside for durations watching the world go by and has been getting used to being in a car.
Even though she has made progress so far though, being outside is still an overstimulating experiencing for her which needs to be managed. When walking on lead in public she is reactive to things that pass her. This includes barking and jumping/pulling on lead when strangers walk past, sees other dogs in the distance and ebikes/cyclists are passing. She shows a mix of defensiveness and excitement, as understandably it’s all a new experience for her. When walking in public, Gambit currently wears a muzzle, this has so far been a precautionary measure and hopefully she can progress towards normal walkies without it.
Overall Gambit is a fantastic dog at home, that is low maintenance and feels part of the family. Understandably though, she is learning and experiencing many new things. So she needs an owner who can guide her with patience, care and control her strength when she does get overstimulated. A loyal, protective and big hearted dog who lights up with joy when she sees her humans, is waiting for her forever home.
