About Gus
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE CANNOT FLY OUR ANIMALS WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
**Before applying, please remember that adopting a puppy into your home is a huge commitment, and very demanding of your time. Puppies require daily exercise, positive and varied socialisation, grooming, training and playtime. When applying, please consider your work hours, holidays, and how busy your personal life is. Puppies will need someone who is home for most of the day with regular focused input, especially in those first six months after adoption **
NAME: Gus
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to SAFE Esperance from the pound with his siblings.
BREED: American Staffordshire Terrier mix
Breed Traits: American Staffordshire Terriers originally a working breed are high energy, playful, affectionate and intelligent but do require training as they can be headstrong. They are very social with adults and children and are extremely loyal but can suffer from separation anxiety if left for long periods and not raised with good training to grow confidence. Their sociability with dogs is a facet that needs sensible and careful work from an early age.
**************************************************************************
ASSETS: Affectionate, eager to please, friendly, sweet and playful. He’s an outgoing, confident and lovely natured boy.
FAVOURITE THINGS: Gus loves to be around people for cuddles, plays and pats, and will happily follow you around the house as you go about your day. He’s in a foster home with his sister and they both love to play together. His foster carer has been giving him chew toys and encouraging him to chew on them instead of hands and everything else that pups usually chew on! He is a typical puppy with bursts of energy where he plays for a while then settles down for a snuggle and snooze before waking up and doing it all over again!
ENDEARING FEATURES: Gus is an outgoing pup once he feels confident and is a happy little chap. He’s also very affectionate and will lap up all the attention he can get!
OTHER ANIMALS: Being a young puppy, he will get on well with other friendly dogs after gentle, supervised introductions. He could live with a dog-savvy, confident cat, again after gentle introduction. He has had supervised introductions to chickens, sheep and calves in his foster home and was a little unsure initially, but soon gained confidence around them.
GENERAL INFO: Gus will need training for pretty much everything being so young. Housetraining is underway but he still has some way to go to master it. Expect accidents while he’s settling into his new home and routine! He rarely barks, is crate trained and knows that the crate is his safe space, although he does whine a little initially when he’s put to bed. He’ll benefit greatly from puppy school and ongoing classes into adulthood where he can learn and mix with other dogs, and this is a commitment we will expect from his new owner. We expect these pups to be medium sized but there are no guarantees. His foster carer has been handling him regularly to get him used to having his nails trimmed, having a bath and having people look into his mouth and ears. He has been taken on car rides and has travelled well.
ESSENTIALS for Gus:
** an active, loving home where someone is there for most of the day, essential in the first six months after adoption
** a home where he is treated as part of the family and is allowed to be inside or out as he needs and to sleep inside at night
** a decent sized, well fenced garden where he can run, play, sniff and explore in safety
** attendance at puppy school and continued training into adulthood for him to learn and grow confidence – essential
** continued positive, gentle exposure and socialisation
Gus will have bursts of energy while a pup and we envisage will have medium to high energy at times as an adult dog.
Gus could live with dog-savvy gentle children over 6 years of age, depending on experience and always with supervision, who will play and interact with him but know when to give him space.
If Gus sounds like the perfect fit for your family, please send an enquiry and we’ll be in touch soon.
