Meet Checkers,
Checkers is a smart, happy, and playful boy who’s ready to find his people! Checkers is best suited to experienced owners who understand his confident and independent nature, but he’s also adaptable and can settle well into just about any household.
This bright boy is full of personality and always excited to make new human friends. He’s active, engaging, and playful, making him a great match for people or families who love to get out and about. Checkers is not just friendly but also clever, and he’ll thrive in a home where his sharp mind and energetic spirit are celebrated.
If you’re looking for a dog who is equal parts fun, smart, and affectionate, Checkers might be the perfect fit for you!
Ideal Home: Checkers is fine to live in either a standalone home or on a farm/acerage, with a medium to large yard and high, secure fencing.
Family: Checkers is open to meet kids of any age - as long as they are dog savvy.
Checkers is fine to live with people who work full-time hours as he shows no signs of separation anxiety. He is independent and able to spend time in the yard on his own, but would also love to be inside with his new family too.
Furry Friends: Checkers is best to be the only dog in the home. His dog assessment was pretty straight forward, he doesn't want or need dog friends. He is manageable around other dogs but prefers to be friends with humans over dogs.
As we cannot test in this environment, we are unsure how Checkers would go living with, or meeting, cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Checkers would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience.
Checkers is still learning his name, but he knows commands such as sit. He is a smart boy and very trainable and is trying to learn more.
He is food motivated too - so having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would be an excellent idea as he is very responsive to them. He is gentle when taking treats from you.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Checkers has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 30-60mins a day to keep him content and happy. Checkers isn't too interested in playing with toys but he likes to go for walks, explore new areas, and personal play with his handlers.
Checkers walks well on lead with minimal pulling. He is best to be walked on either a harness or martingale.
Staff Comments: Independent yet friendly, Checkers is always excited to meet new faces and show off just how smart he is. With his lively spirit and clever mind, he’s sure to keep you smiling every day.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
