About Big Budgie
Big Budgie is a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, a species that is well known across Australia.
Some key facts about SC Cockies:
- Can live upwards of 60 years
- Very dusty due to natural powder down
- Can be loud
- Can be destructive, and have a powerful beak
- Need stimulation to stay happy, so lots of toys and natural forage!
- Require a large solid enclosure or aviary
Big Budgie is a sweet, presumed male and unknown aged cockatoo who loves head scratches and sitting on your shoulder. He came to the rescue with partially clipped wings, but is in otherwise good health. He has been cleared for Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease, Chlamydia and on faecal testing.
During his stay at the veterinary clinic and at the rescue, he appears to be a quiet bird - but when he does vocalise it is quite loud. He makes a 'small bird' noise which reminds us of a cockatiel whistle, and enjoys doing 'loop de loops' in this cage. He loves natural forage and will shred the leaves offered to him as well as native flowers/pods.
Big Budgie requires a home that will allow him out of the cage often or provided with an aviary space. You will need to consider the following:
- Budget for cockatoo toys, perches and a strong cage
- Feeding a low fat diet of vegetables, seeds and pellets
- Life after you - cockatoos live a long life, who will take care of him if he outlives you?
- Does anyone have any dust allergies or lung conditions?
Big Budgie will come microchipped with a lifetime registration which will be transferred to the new owner after a successful 4 week foster period. An enclosure will need to be set up and ready to go before Big Budgie can be picked up (either from Scoresby or Carrum Downs)
We do not know his exact age, only that he is a mature adult. His gender is presumed based on dark coloured eyes.
Medical notes
No known pre-existing conditions.
Adoption details
Adoption Process – Lazzi’s Legacy Bird Rescue & Sanctuary Inc.
Rescue – Rehabilitation – Rehome
Our adoption process begins with an email conversation, including a series of questions designed to help us learn more about you and your home environment. This helps us ensure the best possible match between you and one of our birds.
Once we have identified a suitable bird, a four-week foster period will begin. This trial allows you and the bird to adjust and determine if it’s the right fit. If things don’t work out, you may either trial another bird or choose to have your adoption fee refunded.
If the bird settles in well and you decide to become their forever home—congratulations!
