About Barkley (On Trial)
Barkley went on trial on 31/7. Please see our other pets at www. Dogrescuenewcastle. Com. Au particularly sandy, scottie and lizzie. . . 5yo maltese barkley is one of the biggest characters we have ever had the pleasure of caring for! this little guy has got personality plus and the cutest little face to match. Barkley certainly has the cutest trick we have ever seen from a rescue dog, or any other dog for that matter. He sits on his back legs with his front paws bent in front of him to beg for food. Because his front legs are quite short it is quite possibly the funniest thing you will ever see. Contrary to his name, barkley isn't an incessant barker-- we just thought that the name suited him to a tee. . . When he first came in to care barkley was filthy, crawling with fleas and was so matted that he couldn't even go to the toilet properly or be picked up comfortably. Barkley was underweight and cowered to the floor when you tried to pick him up or even come close to him. Now, after just a few short weeks in care he is a completely different dog! barkley gets very excited when he hears the front door and knows that you are home and will sit and wait at the door to be let in to greet you. He also now comes to you for a pat and a cuddle and has learned that hands mean affection, not punishment. . . Barkley has a beautiful non-shedding coat which won't leave hair around your house. He'll need regular combing and clipping to keep him comfortable and gorgeous. (note: his eyes are perfectly normaly, they just show camera flash in his photos). . Barkley loves to be around and play with other dogs and has taken a particular liking to big dogs, as he was housed in the pound during the day with several large breed dogs. He also loves going for walks, and, even though he is quite a small sized dog, he is currently being walked at least once a day which he really enjoys. As a result, barkley will need to go to a home where he can be taken for walks regularly and given the opportunity to get out of the house and have new adventures. Barkley has a few toys that he likes but is much more of a people dog, or, loves a game of rough and tumble with other dogs instead. He is currently in foster care with sandy, a one year old chihuahua cross italian greyhound who is never shy of a game or two. Barkley does not have an aggressive bone in his body and although he can become tired of his foster brother's continuous games he has never snapped or even growled at him. . . Barkley is an inside dog who comes inside the house while we are home but stays outside (usually laying in the nice warm sun) while we not home. He is house trained but will need to be supervised on carpeted areas for a little while longer just in case. He currently sleeps in the laundry with his foster brother during the night and doesn't go to the toilet until he is let out in the morning. He will need to sleep inside. . . Barkley will benefit from further training and discipline from a willing teacher. He is a very wilful little guy who doesn't always come back to you when you call him but he has recently started responding to his name being called and will pay attention when you talk to him. Although he may not be the most obedient dog, he makes up for it in personality, loyalty and affection. . . Barkley would be the perfect pet for just about any active person or family. Although he loves to sit on your lap for a cuddle he couldn't just be a lap dog, he is much too active for that! a family with small children would also not be ideal for barkley as he does look a bit like a teddy bear and he might be hurt by little hands. Barkley is a wonderful dog with so much love to give. . . Barkley is in foster care in muswellbrook nsw (in the hunter valley past singleton) but is able to be brought to newcastle to be introduced on weekends.
