Helmar is a great companion dog, but she has had significant changes in her life in the last couple of years, and she needs a clear and consistent routine, with plenty of interests to keep her smart mind busy, without becoming bored or spoilt

If she is allowed to settle into poor habits she will resource guard food, and decline to obey requests, and will bite.

She will need a confident, calm & experienced owner who will allow her plenty of time to settle in and not allow her on the lounge or bed.

If you want her to do something that she does not want to do, she may bite you (or try too) and for this reason, she is not suitable to live or have around children, nor for a first time dog owner.

She is social and loves the company of other smaller dogs. Her eyesight has the very early start of cataracts, and she is wary now of younger large dogs, but copes well with older large dogs who are not boisterous
She has slight urinary incontinence which is well managed with daily medication

Helmar walks well on lead, and when life is well ordered and she is used to behaving nicely in a good routine, -her behaviour reflects this. She loves playing with a ball and enjoys relaxed doggy outings.

Like all poodles, Helmar will need a full groom approximately every 6 weeks, (Cost approx. $90 – 120) and will need an experienced Professional Groomer who is prepared to manage a dog who bites when her front nails are trimmed – not for a beginner groomer.

In foster care Helmar has acted as a mentor and rehab nurse for another young toy poodle mix and has done a fabulous job as a companion for her. They are not a bonded pair but would live very happily together. She would also live happily with a calm older larger dog
