About Duke
Currently in Foster care in Narre Warren
A big cuddle bug Duke or galoof or dicky Duke I call him and is 4 years old. Duke loves to be with you wherever you go, even the toilet haha, his beautiful big eyes look deep into yours just wanting pats and pats and even more, he will even snuggle into you in bed, but beware of that Rottie tongue he likes to make sure you feel it.
Duke came from a farm living with an older rottweiler, but was getting out chasing bunnies.... what dog doesn't like to chase little bunnies? Duke is very active and keen to play with balls, tug of war ropes, teddies etc and loves going out for walks... he is still learning to walk on a lead so he will need someone willing to put the work into him as I'm currently taking him to obedience classes.... he shows off there! Give him treats and his eyes are on you! He is becoming more vocal with his Rottie grumbles talking away at classes, but also with cuddles and belly rubs he will grumble away with his whipper tail wagging.
Duke was head shy when he first came to me, it would take a bit of time to get a collar on and we are slowly introducing the halti, but not quite there at getting it done up. He is progressing with trust, same with touching his feet, but he now will give his paw when asked. Dog baths he isn't keen on but with a patient dog groomer and you there to hold him and just slowly work with him, he comes up beautifully.
I haven't had him around children (I don't have any) but older kids 12 and upwards that can be supervised he will be fine as he can be pushy if he jumps on you for pats and attention. He can get a bit cheeky and tries to grab your sleeve or your hand when he's in play mode hence older kids that will understand rottweilers and that they aren't biting. Initially when he has met adults he does try to jump up on new people, once he settles he is fine, but like all excited dogs they can get that sneaky jump in again.
Duke is now waiting for his dinner and doesn't take your hand with his treats, you just need to be firm with telling him to wait and gentle. Currently using a slow feeder bowl and has a never ending belly...
Duke will be fine with another dog preferably 4yrs and under or one that is high drive when it comes to playing, he does play well with my 5yr old female Rottie, but can get a bit too much as she's not as high driven and he does like to get on the back and stay there.
He doesn't like long leads getting caught in-between his legs, something i am working with. He does like to bring your shoe or slipper to his bed when you go out, but doesn't chew them up.
Duke has come along way since I've had him. He would be great if someone wanted a work buddy. He absolutely loves going in the car, just lays in the backseat once you get going.
Duke would love someone that will spend a lot of time with him and progress with his obedience that will be slow and patient with him. He will love a fur sibling especially if has going to be left at home for hours at a time. He has been crated for an 1-2hrs whilst no one home and was fine with a bone or treat that will last awhile, he does go outside to the toilet if you have a dog door and had only 1 accident as I closed it off one night. You are welcome to call Sue at Iron Dog Rescue on 0437010492 for any questions about the dogs or our adoption process.
