Medical notes
Diagnosed Medical Condition – Bilateral Medial Luxating Patellas (MLP)
Explanation of condition: Toffee was examined and found to have bilateral medial luxating patella (MLPs). Her left patella is a grade 3-4, this means it tends to luxate out (and stays out) but can be pushed back into position with some pressure. Her right patella is a grade 2-3, which means that it tends to luxate in/out of position fairly easily. When the knee caps luxate, they move towards the medial (inside) aspect of the knee.
X-rays have been taken and they do show some early bony changes of the affected joints, and both stifles feel thickened as well. However, Toffee does not appear to be clinically lame and weight bears well on both hind legs. She appears to be able to navigate the different levels of shelving in her pod and jumps up and down quite comfortably. It is still, however, hard to fully assess her gait (and if lameness would occur) in a shelter situation as the Toffee is mainly in a smaller confined space.
There is an increased predisposition for cats with MLPs to develop arthritis. Hence, it is important that her weight be well managed, so as not to become an overweight cat. Arthritis management may need to be considered in the future as well-joint supplements/diets, arthritis injection courses, pain relief medications.
Adoption details
Simply note the ID number and the cats name and visit our hostel at 200 Elder Street in Greensborough. Alternatively you can call the hostel on 8457 6500. We are currently open Mon-Fri 10am-4pm / Sat-Sun 10am-3pm.
You should bring proof of your current address and preferably photo identification such as your driving license. You can only adopt a cat for yourself we do not allow animals to leave with third parties. If you are wishing to adopt a cat as a present for someone, bring them with you as cats are individuals and bond with different people in different ways, the cat you may choose, may not choose your friend! It is also important to allocate time for adoption and we recommend you allow at least a couple of hours to get to know the cat and do the necessary paperwork.
When you visit you will get to meet the cat and as this is a very important decision for both you and the cat you choose we will want to ensure the two of you are compatible and that you understand what will be involved in taking the cat into your home.
We will want to be satisfied that you are prepared to be a responsible pet owner. Responsible pet owners at the most basic level, have their pets registered, micro-chipped and de-sexed unless they are registered breeders. They also understand the issues involved in being able to properly care and take responsibility for the welfare of their pets. Most Councils in Victoria have limits on the numbers of cats you may own without a permit. It is important to check with your Council if you already own the limit and obtain a permit for the extra cat before adoption. We will require to see your permit.
We will answer any questions you have regarding cat care and help you to obtain any support you may need.
