Meet Onyx,
Onyx may be a big boy, but don’t let his size fool you - he’s as gentle and sensitive as they come. With his friendly nature and happy personality, he’s always ready to brighten your day. He’s smart, confident, and full of playful energy, making him a perfect match for active people or families who love to get out and about.
This charming guy is a true social butterfly who loves making new friends - whether it’s a quick hello or an enthusiastic tail wag, Onyx is always keen to greet everyone with warmth. He’s affectionate, sometimes a little boisterous, and always engaging, keeping life full of fun and love.
Onyx would thrive with experienced owners who understand his breed and can give him the guidance he needs to shine. Adaptable and easy going, he’ll settle into just about any household where he’s included in the action and surrounded by people who care. If you’re looking for a sweet, happy soul who’s ready to share his big heart, Onyx is waiting to meet you!
Ideal Home: Onyx is fine to live in either a standalone home or on a farm/acerage, with a medium to large yard and high, secure fencing.
Family: Onyx is open to meet kids from 10 years and up. The reason for this is that Onyx is a larger dog and he may accidently knock smaller kids over - especially during play time. Onyx also enjoys his privacy during meal time and prefers to eat without interruption. Older kids will be able to respect his space whilst he's eating.
Onyx is best to live with people who work part-time hours as he shows very mild signs of separation anxiety - this is manageable though. He is able to spend time in the yard on his own without any issues but would love to be inside with his new family too.
Furry Friends: Onyx is open to meet other dog, however he does require further socialisation and desensitisation before being expected to be able to make doggo friends straight away. During his assessment Onyx was a little unsure at the start but then became very social and very playful as the assessment went on. A little time invested into his training and development would do wonders for him and help him manage any stress he initially feels when he first sees another dog.
Onyx is not suitable to live with cats/pocket pets.
Training & Development: Onyx would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. Group classes would also be a good idea so that Onyx can continue to development his dog sociability skills. Onyx may jump on you for attention, this behaviour is not ideal but he doesn't do it all the time and he has been responsive to training to counter act this behaviour.
Onyx knows his name, and he knows commands such as sit, down, stay and is also learning loose lead walking. He is a smart boy! He is food motivated and is quite gentle when taking treats from you - so having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would be an excellent idea.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Onyx has mid to high-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 30-60mins a day to keep him happy and healthy. Onyx shows interest in toys - he likes chew toys and plush toys. He also loves to go for walks, personal play with his handlers, playing with water and training sessions.
Onyx generally walks very well on lead, but may pull if something catches his eye. He is best to be walked on a martingale collar.
Staff Comments: Onyx is a water baby. He loves to splash around in his pool, play with the hose and just be around water in general. He is a big, soft teddy bear who just wants your attention and affection. He also loves to play with his favourite squeaky toy.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
