About Buddy
Duke!
The French Mastiff, also known as the Dogue de Bordeaux, is a large and powerful breed known for its muscular build and massive head, which is the largest in the dog kingdom. They are gentle, quiet, and make great family dogs, often described as loyal and protective. This breed has a rich history dating back to 14th-century France and is one of the oldest and rarest breeds in the country.
Duke is as goofy as he is impressive! This stunning 55kg boy is a beautiful example of a Dogue de Bordeaux & we hope to find him a guardian who is knowledgeable about the breed or has, at least, owned large, powerful breeds previously.
With his imposing & majestic appearance, it is vital to understand that Duke is on a journey which will require consistent & positive training. These types of dogs do NOT need a "heavy hand", they need smart training techniques which avoid harsh or punishing methods. He already knows Sit & Shake :)
Duke is only now, just learning how to walk on a leash &, make no mistake, he is strong! We are starting him out on a front-attach harness as this helps to reduce some of that pulling power.
Duke has lived with another dog previously but, other than her, he is completely undesocialised with other dogs. We suggest that, to start with, he may be better as an only-dog whilst you work with him to form a bond, gain his trust & get that all-important training underway. Positive reinforcement training is one of the very best ways to form an unbreakable bond with your dog. You find real connection as you work together.
Duke has lives with children in the past & would make an awesome family dog around dog-savvy kids. He also travelled well in the van, jumping in willingly for a road trip.
Duke is very affectionate, leaning in for fuss & enjoying loving interactions with his favourite people.
One final thing about our Dukey: Dog slobber!! If you don't like your dogs with goopy chops, then Duke is not the one for you! He dribbles slobber like wallpaper paste. A drool cloth will become your new best friend!
Come in to meet our incredible Duke, we keep him in a quieter area of the shelter so you won't find him down the Adoptions corridor.
