Meet Derwent,
Looking for a dog who’s the whole package? Say hello to Derwent — a bubbly boy with a heart of gold and a tail that never stops wagging!
Derwent is a total sweetheart who’s ready to jump paws-first into his forever home. Whether you’re a first-time dog owner or a seasoned dog-lover, Derwent is the kind of dog who fits right in. He’s super adaptable and would thrive in just about any household — from solo adventurers to bustling families.
This playful guy has energy to burn and would be a fantastic match for active people or families who love walks, playtime, and outdoor fun. He’s always up for an adventure, but also happy to kick back and soak up your affection.
Derwent is gentle, outgoing, and oh-so-friendly. He’s the kind of dog who makes fast friends wherever he goes — humans and fellow dogs alike. He’s smart, social, and loves being part of the action. Whether it’s a game of fetch, a new trick, or simply shadowing you around the house, Derwent makes everything a little more fun.
Ideal Home: Derwent is fine to live in a standalone home or farm/acerage, with a medium to large sized yard and high, secure fencing.
Family: Derwent is open to meet kids of any age -but his size should be considered as he may accidently knock smaller kids over.
Derwent is fine to live with people who work full-time or part-time hours as he is fine to be left alone. On occasion Derwent would love to be able to spend time inside the home with his new family.
Furry Friends: Derwent is open to meet other dogs. During his dog assessment he had a loose body and wagging tail. He was playful and eager to interact but his focus was still able to be broken by his handler. His play style may be too playful for other dogs, but he keeps things fairly gentle during interactions. He can also be trained to ignore other dogs on walks.
As we cannot test in this environment, we are unsure how Derwent would go living with/meeting cats & pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Derwent would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. Group classes would be a great idea too so that his dog social skills remain sharp. Derwent can jump up on you, although this is rare. He is gentle when he does this though.
With additional training and time to settle into a new routine, Derwent could be the type of dog that you could take to a dog friendly cafe or social setting.
Derwent is still learning his name, but he knows commands such as: sit. He is food motivated too, and is gentle when taking treats from you - so having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would be an excellent idea.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Derwent has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 20-60mins a day to keep him satisfied & happy. Derwent doesn't show much interest in playing with toys, he prefers personal play with his handlers or dog social outings.
Derwent walks well on lead but can pull on occasion. He is best to be walked on a martingale.
Staff Comments: Derwent is a very sweet boy who loves affection and is very trainable also. He's lovely to be around and is very handsome, too!

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
