Meet Duggie,
When Duggie first arrived at the shelter, life felt a little too big and scary. He was unsure, overwhelmed, and needed some time to figure things out. But wow – what a transformation! With a little patience and a lot of love, Duggie has truly blossomed into the most loving, calm, and affectionate boy you could hope to meet.
Duggie is a big softie with a gentle soul. He may be a bit shy at first, but once he warms up, you’ll see just how sweet, friendly, and playful he really is. He loves making new friends (both human and dog), he enjoys some playtime, and will happily trot along on a walk without a fuss.
He's best suited to experienced dog owners and would thrive in a peaceful, quiet home where he can relax and feel safe. Duggie doesn’t ask for much – a cozy spot to snooze, some gentle affection, and a human or two who understands that sometimes the best dogs are the ones who start off a little unsure but love you all the more deeply for it. If you’re after a calm, loyal, and heart-meltingly sweet dog, Duggie might just be your perfect match. He’s been waiting patiently for someone special to notice just how wonderful he is.
Ideal Home: Duggie is suitable to live in a standalone house or farm/acerage, with a medium to large sized yard and high, secure fencing.
Family: Duggie is open to meet kids of any age but older kids may be more understanding of his needs as he can be a little shy when meeting new people/kids.
Duggie is fine to spend time in the yard on his own but would also like to be inside with his new owners. Duggie is fine to live with people who work full-time, too.
Furry Friends: Duggie is dog selective and what we mean by that is that other dogs will be selective of him and his play style. Duggie is fine to meet dogs but he does lack manners - luckily he is quiet smart so he has been learning appropriate behaviour and manners but we'd like to see this type of socialisation training continue in his new home.
As we cannot test in this environment, we are unsure how Duggie would go living with/meeting cats & pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Duggie would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. Group classes would also be good too, to ensure that Duggie learns manners when meeting other dogs. Duggie may jump up on you on occasion - usually only during play - but he is learning not to.
Duggie is still learning his name, but he knows commands such as: sit and shake. He is very food motivated too, and is gentle when taking treats from you - he is also highly trainable too - so having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would be an excellent idea.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Duggie has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 20-30mins a day to keep him healthy & happy. Duggie shows interest in playing with toys - mainly soft toys - but he prefers personal play with his handlers or playing with other dogs.
Duggie walks really well on lead and even knows how to loose lead walk too. He is fine to be walked on any apparatus you choose.
Staff Comments: Despite his rough start to shelter life Duggie has made a complete turn around. He is very sweet and smart. He is also affectionate and highly trainable. He can be a little shy with strangers.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
