Meet Shakira,
Shakira is a stunning arctic beauty with a personality as unique as her gorgeous good looks! She’s looking for a special home — one that understands the quirky charm of huskies and has a bit of experience with independent breeds.
She’s not one to dive head first into new situations — calm, quiet vibes are totally her thing. Shakira thrives in peaceful homes where she can take her time to settle in and show her true colours. Once she trusts you, you’ll get to witness her sweet and affectionate side that’s well worth the wait!
True to husky form, Shakira is independent, a little aloof, and definitely not afraid to let you know when she’s not in the mood. She’s curious, excitable, and yes — sometimes stubborn. But she loves her walks and would make a wonderful match for someone who enjoys getting outside and exploring nature at a relaxed pace.
If you're the outdoorsy type with a calm home and a soft spot for sensitive souls, Shakira might just be your perfect match. Give her patience, understanding and a steady routine — and you'll be rewarded with a loyal, endearing sidekick who marches to the beat of her own drum (or maybe just howls along to it!).
Ideal Home: Shakira is suitable to live in a standalone home or on a farm/acerage, with a medium to large yard & high, secure fencing.
Family: Shakira is open to meet kids from 15 years & up. She's a wonderful dog but she has some quirky traits, which we have been told is typical husky behaviour, when it comes to her personal space. She's a bit sensitive of her tummy for one and we feel that old kids would be more understanding of her boundaries.
Shakira is fine to spend time in the yard on her own but she may starting singing the song of her people if left alone for too long. She'd love access to inside the home where she can with you more often than not. Shakira is fine to live with people who work part-time.
Furry Friends: Shakira is best to be the only dog in the house for now. During her dog assessment she was quiet ok being around the other dog but she was incredibly stressed. We feel that with some time to decompress after adoption, and some gradual introductions to other dogs, she would be fine to make friends.
As we cannot test in this environment, we are unsure how Shakira would go living with/meeting cats & pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of her new owners.
Training & Development: Shakira would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. On occasion Shakira may jump up to say hello, usually she does this when she is excited.
Shakira knows her name, but often pretends that she doesn't know it at all. She also knows commands such as: sit & down. She is a clever girl. She isn't overly food motivated, she can be picky with the types of treats offered to her, but when she does accept a treat from you she is gentle - so having treats on you during training to mark good behaviour would be an excellent idea but it may take some time to find a treat that she likes. We know of a few local raw food businesses that offer a 'candy bar' style approach where dogs can sample before purchase - ask staff about this if you're interested!
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Shakira has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 30-60mins a day to keep her content & happy. Shakira shows interest in playing with toys - she seems to like playing with soft toys. She also likes personal play with her handlers.
Shakira walks well on lead - but she doesn't like lead pressure. Because of this, she is best to be walked on a harness. This may change in a home once she has settled into a new routine and has decompressed from shelter life.
Staff Comments: Shakira is a typical husky. In addition she is playful, sweet and loving once she gets to know you. Ideally she would go into a home with an experienced owner. She's a wonderful dog and would be a great addition into your home if you're dedicated to her. She was previously let down by her past owner, we'd hate to see that happen again...

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
