Hi, I'm Sabi!
I may be small, but my story is already a big one. At around six weeks old, I’d already been through more than any pup should. I was abandoned in the scrub with my littermates, left to fend for ourselves. We were cold, scared, and too young to survive on our own. But by some miracle, a group of campers found us out there and got us to safety just in time. Off The Chain swooped in to save us, and that’s when my new life began. We were rescued on ANZAC Day, and that’s where the inspiration for my name came from.
I am named Sabi in honour of the Aussie explosive detection dog who survived 14 months MIA in Afghanistan before being found by a US soldier and taken to a nearby town, where an Aussie handler recognised her! Just like my namesake, I’m brave, full of life, and always up for an adventure.
If you’re looking for a buddy who’s always excited to explore, I’m your girl. When I’m not busy playing and discovering new things, I love to snuggle up in my crate or with my doggy siblings. I have a sweet, loving side and give everything I have to those who earn my trust. I’m a very clever girl, and my foster family has worked hard to teach me hand signals since I’m hard of hearing. I’m already learning that hand signals mean “yes” to fun and “wait” for calm, and I’m showing just how much I love to learn.
My ideal home will be with a dedicated and adaptable family who can continue my training and help me grow into the best version of myself. I love other dogs and get along with them, though I can miss their social cues because of my hearing. I’d love to live with an older, social dog who will help me feel secure and won’t overreact if I don’t respond to some of their verbal cues right away.
I’m doing great with my house training, learning the ropes quickly, and I’m super food motivated—so teaching me new things is actually pretty easy (especially if you have treats!). Walks, hikes, enrichment games, obedience training? Count me in! I’ll thrive with a home that has structure, patience, and lots of love to give while keeping my brain busy. I do great at the vet, am learning my basic commands, and I travel okay in the car, though I sometimes get a bit nauseous.
If you’re looking for a smart, spirited sidekick who’s already beaten the odds and is only just getting started, then I might be the one for you.
Medical notes
Although I’m deaf (or very hard of hearing!), that doesn’t stop me from living my best life. Deaf dogs like me are just as trainable and capable as hearing dogs – we just learn in different ways. I’m already picking up hand signals and learning that they mean good things! With a bit of patience and consistency, I’ll show you how clever and responsive I am. My deafness doesn’t slow me down at all – it just means I need a family who’s ready to learn along with me.
Adoption details
Before applying, please consider and finalise the following:
- Real estate approval
- Fence requirements
- Outside shelter areas
- Other resident pets fully vaccinated and preferably desexed
- The rescue pet's dietary requirements eg large breed vs medium breed, age
- Enrichment, exercise and training needs of pet you are applying for
- If you have not read our adoption process below in full, please do not apply until you have.
Once you are ready to adopt, please complete the OTC Adoption Application questionnaire below. This is not a contract or agreement of any kind, just an expression of interest in the animal. We will not authorise meets unless this has been completed and only approved applicants may meet the animal. Once you are approved and have submitted all relevant information, we will organise for you to meet the pet. We will not contact you if you do not complete the form in full AND provided the required photos of yard/fencing within 48hrs. If you apply to adopt but require us to hold the pet more than 3 days before meeting, we will ask you for a non-refundable holding deposit of $100. If you are unwilling to put a deposit on the pet, we will continue to advertise and speak with other potential adopters. This holding deposit will be subtracted from the adoption fee should you adopt the animal on hold for you.

NEED TRANSPORT?
1. Apply to adopt per the above process.
2. Get quotes and select your desired transporter. We recommend Aeropets, Jetpets, and Dogtainers. Contact us for weights, height etc where needed. We also recommend Pet Waggin pet transport who can assist with road transport.
3. Message or email us to say you have applied and that you will require transport. Tell us which company and a potential departure date from that pet's nearest airport or meet point.
4. If your application is successful, we will lock in a date with you, coordinate any required 'fit to fly' certifications, a food delivery to your home, and appropriate training to make your new pet as comfortable on transport as possible.
5. All adoption contracts, adoption fees, and photo ID must be submitted to us via email before animal boards transport.
We will take into consideration the pet's ability to travel safely and comfortably before agreeing to send them on transport, and expect a high level of care from whatever company is engaged to move the animal.
