About Billy
Billy is a small but mighty kelpie with loads of potential and love to give. At only 12kg, he is on the smaller side for a kelpie, but what he lacks in size, he makes up for in personality and bark!
Billy is very smart and learns new things quickly. He can wait for his food, shake, sit, drop and stop. He especially enjoys puzzle toys where he has to earn his food. Any toy/ball/frisbee is the bees knees to Billy and he enjoys playing in the yard with them. Billy is quite good on lead and loves a sniff, though he can bark at new noises (especially when walking at dusk/night), so will need more exposure to the big wide world. He is toilet trained and sleeps all night; you won’t hear a peep out of him except maybe a cute snore occasionally. Once the day starts though, he is full of beans like the energizer bunny and will certainly get you out of bed for that early morning run you've been putting off. He can be a bit mouthy (gentle but mouthy) and loves his morning cuddles and belly rubs with his foster mum. Billy loves an adventure especially if it involves a car ride, and is very well behaved when going for a ride.
He has a very sweet nature, and is especially human focused, always up for a belly rub and cuddle. He seems to love most people and dogs, but possibly has a real shining to older men and kids. He is not suited to very small kids yet as he could knock them over with his exuberance. Billy loves his furry foster siblings, and can often be found cuddling up to his 16 year old doggy foster sister. He loves to play and chase other dogs, and will bark at them to initiate play, which is something that some dogs may find annoying. Another active, well behaved older dog in his new home would be great, for companionship and leadership. He has not been tested with cats or pocket pets.
Just like any kelpie puppy, he has lots of energy and smarts, so will need someone to commit to his training and exercise needs, being consistent and persistent. Teaching him an "off switch" and giving him an outlet for his herding drive will be key to his success. He would excel at obedience with the right person and will quickly bond with his handler. An experienced working/herding breed owner or someone committed to learning about these amazing dogs is a must.
