Milonico is a large dog x breed. Chipped as Boxer X but carer thinks maybe Dane or Bull Arab is in the mix. He measures 63cm from foot to top of collar and weighs around 25kg. He wont grow any taller, and should stay at this weight if moderately exercised.
Milonico had a limp when coming into care which our vets determined was shoulder dysplasia, a birth defect common in cross bred large breeds. It’s a thickening of the moving joint bones that result in bone chips causing pain and arthritis. He was referred to our fabulous ortho vet who operated and removed the painful chips and shaved the bone so it functions smoothly. The results were immediate and he was the perfect patient for the ensuing 10 weeks of confinement leading to gradual exercise building up over that time.
The vet signed off on him after a couple of weeks, very happy with the outcome. Long term, the condition shouldn’t pose any further problem and the arthritis can easily be managed with regular movement by way of exercise. He can go on walks but he can’t play ball. No speccies or jumping or impact movement to front legs. If he was able to go swimming, that would be even better. He is a beautiful natured boy and is in care with 5 other dogs ranging in age from 4 months to 11 yrs, all cattle dog mixes except for an 8mo French Bulldog. He gets along with all of them and spends his day playing around with a 4mo cattle dog mix male and the Frenchie. They love to sit out in the sun on the grass and chew on hooves or bones or sticks. He also lives with 3 dog savvy cats and is fascinated with them but has got used to them now and even lets the snuggle up with him on cold nights.
He’s an affectionate boy who adores cuddles and smooches. He hadn’t had much love before coming into care and once he got used to people loving on him, he had his own funny way of hugging, where he’d wrap his head around your ankle while his bum is up in the air. He has been sleeping with his carer due to rehab so she could keep him contained from jumping out of his pen despite his op. He likes to spoon and is lovely and warm on a chilly night.
He is house trained and crate trained but only retreats to the crate when he feels like a snooze. He happily sleeps in the kennel on the deck when he’s had enough play or when his carer is out. He rarely barks, though has recently discovered possums and likes to case the fence line on dusk and make woah woah sounds. He’s a bit of a talker, particularly around meal time, or if he’s being spoken to directly about anything. Think Scooby Doo…..that’s him.
Milonico’s ideal home would be one with another dog for company, medium to large, probably female but he’s currently in care with 2 young males and one old one and gets along fine. A resident mentor dog to show him the ropes and keep him company is a must. He will need a daily or every second day walk but nothing too strenuous at first. 20-30 mins stroll (no hikes) would be perfect for him, but can be increased over time at say 15mins per week, gradually. He has to be a part of your family and sleep inside out of hot and cold weather. He loves a big dinosaur bone and will happily gnaw on that all day. He would love to have someone home if possible but would hate being left for 8-10hrs every day. This handsome guy charms people everywhere he goes and will be very much missed by his carer when he goes. He has been the perfect house guest and patient, and the perfect companion. If you think Milonico is your kinda guy, let us know and apply so we can arrange a meeting.
