Rusty (Was Dusty)

Rusty is a little dog, with a gentle heart and a lot of love to give. He’s spent his whole life with his more dominant best friend, Roxie, but for the first time, he’s ready to step out on his own. Roxie has always taken the lead, putting him in his place and keeping him in check, which means Rusty hasn’t always had the chance to shine. Now that they’re heading to separate homes, we believe he’ll finally get the space to build his confidence and show what a wonderful companion he truly is.

Though he’s a little unsure about being without Roxie, Rusty adapts quickly without any fuss. He’s a sweet, affectionate boy who just needs a bit of reassurance as he settles into his new life. He will thrive in a calm, only-pet home where he can be the center of attention and get the love and security he deserves. An adult-only home would suit him best. Like many dachshunds, he can be a little vocal when excited, but he settles down well once he feels safe.

Rusty has been on a diet in foster care, and he still has a bit more weight to lose to keep him in top shape. Maintaining a healthy weight is especially important for dachshunds to help prevent back issues, so he’ll need an owner who can keep him on track with portion control and gentle exercise.
