About Dermot
If you are seeking to adopt a quiet, placid dog, the set-and-forget kind. then this is not the dog for you! Jack Russell dogs run very true to form, little bundles of livewire energy, loyal and loving companions.
At only one year of age this sweet natured, intelligent neutered dog will appreciate and benefit from lots of exercise, playtime and some ongoing training. Jack Russells are known for barking to some degree. This little boy will often but not always bark back at other neighbourhood dogs, that’s understandable.
He will bark at suspicious strangers, and when you have undesirables roaming around the unit complex in the wee small hours of the morning this can be a desirable trait! But sometimes his spider senses tingle and he may startle you by jumping up for a quick bark and you may not know why, he may just be having a vivid dream.
However, he is not a yapper, and will quickly settle with a quick “uh uh” or sharp. “Oy” command. But here’s the thing - he does not bark when he wants to go out, his toilet training is a work in progress. He has been brought up with another older dog who may have done all the talking for him, and of course the rehoming process is bound to be a bit unsettling for him.
But we have been establishing a good routine. I am prone to waking up at in the wee small hours myself and when I hear him stirring in his bed we both get up for a pit stop. I am home a lot so take him out regularly and he enjoys the praise when he does his stuff. He has taken to alerting me by dragging his lead off its peg and prancing around with it when he wants to go out. Mmmm, who’s training who here?
When out for his walks this trusting dog is determined to cheerfully greet everyone he meets, males, females and children. This is lovely but you need to remind yourself that some folk are timid around dogs, even friendly ones.
He readily jumps into the car which is surprising because he soon gets car sick. For longer journeys he has medication but in case it has now become an anxiety issue we spend fun time in the car each day without travelling anywhere. Maybe if you own a smooth cruising 4WD it would be a different story? A work in progress.
Dermot is a healthy sturdy 7kg dog and I mention this because he likes to bounce onto your lap. I hope you like his name because he knows and comes running to it, a bonus in an adopted dog.
He is extremely popular at the dog park, confident and non-aggressive. This boy has come from a loving home but his owners underwent a change of living circumstance and he is now seeking a stable and loving new home. I have thoroughly appreciated my foster time with this bundle of sunshine, it will be a fortunate household who gets to welcome him as a new family member.
