About Kermit
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Kermit
BEFORE RESCUE: Came to SAFE Esperance from the pound.
BREED: Border Collie x Kelpie
BREED TRAITS: Border Collie was originally bred as a herding dog; they are a sensitive breed that needs company. Affectionate with family and people friendly. Highly intelligent and easy to train they need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation – they are not cuddly couch potatoes and need a job. They will herd anything that moves such as children, cars, bikes etc. They need an active owner, not a novice owner.
Kelpies are high energy and highly intelligent being a working breed, so may need to be found a 'job' to make them feel fulfilled. They get bored easily if their brains are not worked, so training is a must. They are very social with adults and children and social with other dogs. They are very loyal but if the instinct is strong they may try to herd your children.
************************************************************************
ASSETS: Affectionate, friendly, active, playful and very sweet. He’s a devoted boy who loves to be loved!
FAVOURITE THINGS: Kermit loves to chase tennis balls and will keep himself occupied for a good while if he has a treat ball. He loves to go on bush walks, and at home his carer plays ‘hide the treat or toy’ with him which he really enjoys. He likes water and playing tugging games and is very good at keeping his special things away from you! He loves attention and cuddles and will happily curl up for a snuggle on the couch with his person.
ENDEARING FEATURES: He’s a ‘velcro’ dog who loves to be wherever you are even if you’re doing the housework! He will put his head on your chest when you’re snuggling and just stare lovingly at you.
OTHER ANIMALS: Kermit gets on well with other dogs after gentle introduction and could possibly live with another friendly dog in his new home pending a successful meet although he may prefer all the fuss. He won’t be suited to a house with cats or small animals at this stage.
GENERAL INFO: Kermit walks well on a lead – he is training with a good quality slip lead which works well for him, he’s a smart boy and with this understands what you want. He is housetrained. He will bark when people pass the house so we would prefer that he doesn’t have access to the front of the house on a daily basis. He is afraid of storms so will need to be kept inside when storms are forecast. He has dug a couple of small holes in the garden looking for treats but is otherwise not a destructive boy as long as he has sufficient exercise and stimulation. He has a medium to high energy level. He likes to use his brain and knows most commands. He likes to bark at passing traffic when in the car so a crate in the back of the car keeping him away from the windows is probably the best solution.
ESSENTIALS for Kermit:
** A loving, active home with someone who can be with him for a good part of the day or can take him with them when they go out. He lives with a full time worker who works part of the time from home.
** He will need daily exercise, playtime and mental activity. A home that is willing to involve him in daily activities is essential for him as he loves to be right where you are.
** Kermit would benefit greatly from training – he has missed out on all the basic puppy work and so has gaps in his knowledge and understanding – giving him the opportunity to grow in this way would be amazing for him.
** Kermit needs a well fenced, secure yard with grass and interesting things to sniff and explore.
** Kermit needs to be allowed inside the home at appropriate times and to sleep inside at night. He would become very anxious as a 24/7 outside dog – his person is central to his world.
Kermit could live with dog-savvy, gentle children over 10 who will be able to read his signals – he does still jump up a bit and so children will need to be confident to ask for the correct behaviour. He could live with another dog but would probably prefer to be the centre of your world – as far as we know he has always been the only dog in the home.
If Kermit sounds like the perfect fit for your family, please send an enquiry and we’ll be in touch soon.
