About Merlin
Merlin's new home requires the following:
- Daily walks
- To be given toys, chews, and food puzzles.
- No young children.
- A calm house hold.
- To be allowed inside when his people are home and to sleep inside of a night.
- Not suitable for dog parks.
- To have his people home often.
Merlin loves to be with his human preferring to stay close by and will follow them inside and out. He even sleeps in front of the toilet of a night so he can get a sneaky pat from those that need to go. He loves receiving and giving loves and cuddles. He is very responsive to what his human says or does, and that has proven a bonus in his training, he is also very food motivated.
Merlin walks really well on lead, he doesn’t pull and loves to earn some treats for being a good boy. He prefers shorter walks over long hikes; he currently goes for short walks morning and night. He doesn't like it when off lead dogs run up to him while he is walking, he is not suited to dog parks or other areas where dogs are off lead. He will leap into the car with enthusiasm and try and sit on your lap, so a seat belt is in order.
Merlin loves food puzzles, and stuffed kongs with some of his daily food allowance. It helps meet his "licky" tendencies.
Merlin loves to greet new people; he is friendly in greeting all those he meets. He likes to lean against the person who is petting him, and look up at them intensely with his big, brown eyes. Merlin may stand on his hind legs to see what food is getting prepared but will return to the floor once told to. He will sit for treats and will take them gently from your hand. He so wants to please and takes no greater delight in anything than being physically close to his human.
Merlin doesn't bark often but does the cutest little grunts when being patted. He may bark a couple of times when someone arrives but will quieten when told, and waits happily to greet them. Merlin would be happy as an only dog with his people home often where he can get all the attention, but can also live with another mature, and calm dog if he has his own special person to dote on him.
Merlin would be best in a calm household, as excited energy can see him get too excited. Although Merlin is crate trained and it is available to him, he enjoys sleeping on a dog bed and will sleep there the whole night remaining quiet and calm until morning. It’s also a good tool for the occasions he gets too over excited. Merlin has a good recall within the backyard, he knows "sit" and is learning "down" and "wait". He can use a doggy door and will enter and exit during the day, but prefers to sleep inside night and day. At times Merlin's enthusiasm of affection and physical contact can get him a little too excited and forceful, and he will need reminding to wait calmly before he gets a pat.
Merlin is toilet trained and uses the doggy door when he needs to go.
Merlin has on occasions shown potential to resource guard his people from other dogs, he has responded well when shown a better way to behave.
What Merlin's foster carer has said:
- He has a way of looking at you as though you are the only person in the world (until he looks at the next person the same way!).
- His charming demeanour and constant eye contact (including hilarious side-eye, even from afar) make him very easy to love. He will make an amazing companion or family dog (with older children/teens).
