Hi friends, I'm Lil!
I’m a sweet, affectionate boy with a huge heart and an even bigger love for my people. I was sitting on death row in a regional pound, shut down and scared until Off The Chain saved me just in time... Since then, I’ve been learning what safety, love and family really feel like- and I’m ready to find my forever home!
I absolutely adore my humans. Couch snuggles are my specialty, and if I can sleep on my foster child’s bed, that’s even better- I will snuggle up under the doona and help keep the monsters under the bed at bay! I love to be involved in the family's daily life and the kids can even walk me on leash. They help feed me at night and set up my puzzle bowls etc. Watering the garden? I love to play with water from the hose and make a boring job a fun one. Picking up dinner? Throw me in the back seat, I'm keen for the ride! I even get along well with the cats here!
I know basic commands like sit, lay and stop, and I’m even learning to shake. I love enrichment and using my brain- puzzle bowls, Kongs and treat balls float my boat. When I’m waiting for a treat, I pull the funniest expressions… I tilt my head, suck in my cheeks and stare so intensely sometimes that it's hard for my foster to stay focused and not crack up. I'm a very quirky Lil Guy!
I likely experienced some rough treatment in my past and can be very fearful of tall men wearing hats, sunglasses, boots or hi-vis clothing. In one instance I became so frightened that I managed to escape the yard. Because of this, I need a secure 6ft fence and a family who will bring me inside when they leave. With patience, calm reassurance and consistency, I settle beautifully and bond deeply. I recently stayed at a home with shorter fencing and was completely fine - I just need to feel safe and have confident, loving owners. The guest that scared me didn't mean to, but a slower introduction would have been much more beneficial to me. Since I have had that fright I have been put on Zactin to help me manage my anxiety and it's already working fast to help me settle down. I am a young, smart dog with a lot of potential!
I prefer being the only dog in the home, or to be homed with a confident, mature dog who won't make me feel like I need to be in charge. I have lived with several dogs since coming into the rescue and while I get along with most eventually, I do not much like very anxious dogs or reactive ones. They make me feel uncertain and like I need to take control of them and the situation. With a confident dog who won't escalate things, I tend to just get on with it and warm up in time. Dog parks and off-leash group play aren’t my thing because of this. Solo walks together are perfect for me though- I am good on leash, I’m very manageable and even the kids handle me confidently.
I’m looking for a home where I can be included, loved, mentally stimulated and kept safe. If you’re searching for a devoted companion who will snuggle on the couch, make you laugh with ridiculous faces, and love your kids- I might just be your guy.
Medical notes
Lil Guy is currently on 20mg fluoxetine daily to help him ease anxiety. Fluoxetine is a very affordable and safe medication commonly prescribed for dogs with Lil's history. This is a medication prescribed for him to help him with some separation anxiety, which significantly improves with each day he can trust you are coming back for him. This medication is likely not a life long treatment and costs approx $1/day. The intention is that Lil be adopted while medicated with Zactin (we will send him with a start pack!) with this treatment continuing by the adopter until he has settled in and their vet agrees he can be weaned off.
