About Rosey
When Rosey first came to SAFE the Hedland branch had her advertised as a Happy Hippo—an oversized gal just so happy to be alive she was a force to be reckoned with. Several weeks in Perth, with an experienced foster, lots of exercise, a good clean diet and lots of TLC, and this “Desert Rose (as her carer refers to her), is really beginning to blossom. This all-rounder will be a brilliant addition to a loving family who will actively include her. Young and energetic, and initially mouthy (when she didn’t know how else to express herself), she is now showing a relaxed, calm and gentle side that would suit a family with young children. If you’re at home she’s a ‘velcro dog’ (stuck to your side), but shows no separation anxiety at all and can be safely left at home with no destructive behaviours. She will bark at passing dogs, but will also stop on command.
Still young and new to training—she can get overexcited meeting new people and dogs. A big girl, she tends to want to play hard, so has had more success with larger dogs not intimidated by her. But she’s not got a mean bone in her body, and we’re confident that with continued managed introductions she will learn to socialise well with all dogs. Although untested with cats, Rosey has demonstrated her ability to live with other small animals; she has lived with chickens, learned not to chase/bark at birds, can sit and watch fish in a pond, and even play-bowed to a mouse she recently came across!
Smart as a whip Rosey can now use a dog door, sit for her meals, understands ‘stay’, responds well to the command ’No’ by stopping whatever it is she’s doing, and will even bring you her lead when she thinks it’s time for a walk. New to being walked on lead, she can still pull a bit at the start of a walk, but is responding well to correction and learning how to ‘Heel’.
Rosey’s a real ‘Water Baby” and can swim like a fish at the beach or in the river. We have a hunch she’d make a great sailer if you’ve got a boat. But this girl isn’t demanding—she’d be just as happy splashing in a clamshell in the yard.
Like to sleep in? Don’t want a dog pestering you for that ‘daybreak’ walk? Rosey’s your girl! She will happily sleep through the night, go out for a quick wee, and then nap again until almost midday. When your eyes DO finally open though, then it’s time for a cuddle. If there’s not actually an activity for her to do, you’ll more than likely find her sleeping somewhere, saving her energy until it’s required. By the way she’s very proud to have learned how to wee on command,
Rosey loves her food, and will eat anything and everything. But we’ve had her on a strict diet, lots of exercise and she is noticeably slimmer already. We expect her new family will need to continue helping her on her weight loss journey for some time to come.
