About Duke
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Duke
BEFORE SAFE Esperance: Came to SAFE Esperance as an owner surrender.
BREED: Koolie (colour Blue Merle)
BREED TRAITS: The Australian Koolie is believed to be the result of cross breeding the smooth-coated blue merle Collie with the black and tan Collie. Being a herding breed, they require frequent stimulation and exercise – they are hardworking and eager to please. Koolies are friendly, easy-going, fun-loving and rarely aggressive. They are very trainable and obedient by nature, they also make good watchdogs. Without good exercise they can become destructive, they also can become quite anxious if left alone for long periods.
**************************************************************************
ASSETS: Duke is smart, loyal, easy-going, affectionate, eager to please, friendly, playful and very sweet. He's a gorgeous boy who loves to be loved!
FAVOURITE THINGS: Loves his people, walks on the beach (not the water) and playing fetch.
ENDEARING FEATURES: Once Duke imprints on you, he is your shadow. Walks very well on a lead and is happiest when he can see you.
OTHER ANIMALS: Duke gets on well with other friendly dogs after gentle, supervised introductions. He does better if he has a doggy friend to share his life with, in his home. He is fine with foster carers guinea fowl, but not tested with cats.
GENERAL INFO: Duke is deaf and will need patience, and more training with hand signals. He is housetrained but being a boy may mark his territory to begin with but once settled into his new home and routine he is fine! Duke barks when he is scared and unsure. He can live with other dogs and does well when there is another dog in the home encouraging confidence. He is happy to lay on his bed and sleep in his safe space.
MEDICAL: At the moment Duke is on medication for anxiety. He can be an anxious boy and has had a difficult year with losing his owner and having to move a few times in care. We feel that once he has a permanent home, is settled in his environment and made to feel safe, he may well be able to reduce and gradually come off his medication.
ESSENTIALS for Duke:
** Commitment to his medication for anxiety. He takes his daily pill happily.
** a calm, loving home where someone is there for the first couple of months.
** a home where he is treated as part of the family and is allowed to be inside with you.
** a well fenced garden where he can run, play, sniff and explore in safety
** patience teaching him hand signals.
** continued positive, gentle exposure and socialisation
Duke really needs a doggy buddy to help him settle and feel safe when his owner is not there. He could live with dog-savvy gentle children over 12 years of age, depending on experience, as he communicates with his mouth and may give a soft nip if excited.
If Duke sounds like the perfect fit for your family, please send an enquiry and we’ll be in touch soon.
