Where to start with the lovely boy, Blaze. He’s a total sweetheart who has had a very rough early life and has struggled to trust humans again as a result. He was surrendered to us here after many years of re-education under saddle and on the ground but the people looking after him found he was becoming more and more dangerous in ridden work and he could no longer stay where he was. He needed to find somewhere urgently that would assess him properly and work to find him the perfect life that suits his individual needs.
After many sessions both on the ground and ridden with him here, it has become obvious to me that where his personality truly shines and he feels most happiest is being a companion to the other horses. He is one of the most gentle, playful and delightful horses in our paddock and has never shown any nastiness whatsoever to the other horses. He truly shines out there and accepts everyone without question. I have seen him on an almost daily basis playing bitey face and cuddling up to any horse he possibly can!
Where he doesn’t shine so much is under saddle, and one of the main reasons I started this sanctuary was to help horses find the perfect home for their true selves and in all honesty I believe that Blaze does not enjoy being ridden at all. He has shown evasive and highly anxious behaviour when ridden, he managed to get me off on one of our small rides when he decided to ‘spook’ at something but twisted and turned in a panic constantly until he got me on the ground, I had to jump off of my own accord as he just kept escalating the ‘spook’ and I was concerned he was going to hurt us both if I didn’t bail. I don’t consider him to be a safe horse to ride currently and he may never be so his new family need to keep that in mind and accept him for who he is.
Blaze is an extremely good do-er and has incredibly good feet even though he is a little on the fatty side. Once he has decided you are a ‘safe’ human he thoroughly enjoys goings for hand walks and spending time with his person, I think some liberty work or other ground work would be really beneficial to his confidence and you would have a total best friend for life with him.
He has been a picture of health here with no known health issues at all, he’s a very lovely horse and whilst its such a shame that he may never be a ridden horse, I truly believe his skills out in the paddock helping and playing with the other horses is such a benefit to any horsey paddock.
Blaze would be best suited to this companion lifestyle with a confident and gentle human who is happy to help him on the ground and give him the love and affection he deserves.
Preference will be given to applicants who live close by so Blaze doesn’t have to travel a long distance, transport can also be arranged through Elysian Fields Sanctuary if required.
If you think you can offer Blaze the perfect forever home, please complete an application, we would love to hear from you! He has had such a troubled life so far, its time to find him a place to be adored for who he is.
