About Diego
Diego is a pretty 6 year old short-haired Chihuahua looking for his new loving home. He is desexed, vaccinated and ready to go!
We all know that the Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world. Forget all those "teacup" descriptions - they are not recognised breeds. They are physically fragile because of their size and require a great deal of supervision and monitoring - they should not be allowed to jump off the lounge or a bed, their bones can easily fracture.
Because of his size Diego needs a suitable environment - he doesn't take up much space or have strenuous exercise needs outside of short regular walks and perhaps playtime, if interested.
Chihuahuas are curious and bold explorers and could escape through small gaps in the fence, so Diego needs good secure fencing (preferable colourbond) and gates that can be locked for his protection.
Diego is a low-maintenance dog, he has a short coat and bathing usually is necessary every 3-4 weeks. Chihuahuas don't smell unless there's an underlying health problem which makes them excellent dogs to live inside with you.
He is an indoors dog and must have access outside to go to toilet. Diego will suit a single, mature lady that won't leave him home alone for long periods. He does require lots of love and attention. He cannot go to a home with children or visiting grandchildren because of his size. We would also like him to have the company of another friendly chihuahua, or small dog. Chihuahuas are known for their nervous and anxious personalities - mainly because of their size - they need supervision when away from the home - their comfort zone.
Yes, Chihuahuas are known for being yappy. We are pleased to say that Diego is not a barker.
Diego is only 6 years old and has a lifespan of between 12-18 years, although Chihuahuas have been known to live into their 20s. We want his new home to be permanent and one in which he can live his life happily until he is an old main!
If you think you might like to adopt Diego and have not previously owned a chihuahua, we suggest that you research the breed before enquiring about him. We are looking to find the most suitable home for him and will screen applicants until we are satisfied that he will be going to the best possible home.

Midcoast Dog Rescue Inc. is trying to expand its foster carer network so that we can help more dogs in need. This is a very rewarding experience and suits a variety of people. Some people, for whatever reason, are unable to make a permanent commitment to a dog, a commitment which can last for up to 15 years. Others use the fostering experience as an interim measure before committing to permanently owning a dog. If you think you could be interested in becoming a foster carer, either on a long-term or a short-term basis, and would like more information please contact Nigel on 6584 4992 or Wendy on 6584 7027.
