Meet Mereki,
Don't be concerned about his cranky face - Mereki isn't grumpy, he's just got RCF (resting cat face). Mereki is gentle boy who is best suited to an experienced cat owner. Mereki is independent, a little sensitive, but overall agreeable providing that you go slow & allow him to do his own thing. Mereki can be a little aloof at times, you'll often catch him day dreaming. He's a cat who prefers comfort over anything else, so if you're wanting him to come to you but he's curled up on his bed, his stubbornness will kick in. He's a lazy boy whose loving the creature comforts of his condo, especially after his hard life on the streets.
He came in a little worse for wear, his lush medium hair coat was matted which was causing him discomfort - which we hope explains his dashing hair-do.
Mereki is a good fit for people who live in a calm & quiet home as he is sensitive to noise. Mereki loves a quiet environment.
Mereki is best suited to kids that are 10 years & up - reason for this is due to his timidity & need for a quiet home. Older kids will be able to provide a safe and calm environment for him. Mereki is fine to be picked up for short periods of time, preferring all four paws on the ground. Despite his initial reservation, he does like attention. He loves to be patted, and have his cheeks & back scratched. although quiet, you will hear him purr as his starts to knead on the spot to show you how content he is.
Unfortunately, Mereki is not suitable to live with dogs; they scare him.
We feel that Mereki would be able to co-exist and with another cat in time, but for now he is best to be the only cat in the home so that he can decompress & settle into a new home with his new family. He doesn't have a mean one in his body but needs to come out of his shell a little but before being introduced to other cats.
We always encourage cats to be indoor cats. Mereki will be too sensitive for outside living due to the noise. Plus, if he is outside, it will increase his chances of running away, getting lost, injured, or worse. As an inside only cat he can be safe & sound & live his best life.
Mereki has low energy levels – we rarely see him play with toys, and he's not that interested in toys either - if we are being totally honest, he looked insulted when we offered him one... What makes him super happy is a comfy bed & some gentle pats (and maybe a treat or two).
Mereki is not fussy with his food - he'll eat whatever is offered to him. Mereki always uses his litter tray too, without any issues.
Staff Comments: Mereki is a sweet boy who likes to be able to do his own thing. He's more of a room mate than a cat. He is loving, low maintenance and perfect for someone whose looking for a companion or a friend, rather than a pet.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
