Medical notes
Cerebellar hypoplasia is a neurological disease in dogs that affects the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance, coordination, and fine motor skills:
Symptoms
Symptoms include wobbly gait, head and neck tremors, choppy steps, and difficulty sitting or standing. Symptoms usually become apparent when puppies are around six weeks old.
Causes
Cerebellar hypoplasia can be caused by genetic mutations, environmental insults during development, or infections. It's hereditary in some breeds, including Airedales, Chow Chows, Boston Terriers, and Bull Terriers.
Treatment
There's no treatment for cerebellar hypoplasia, but environmental accommodations can help affected dogs live relatively normal lives. A non-slip, flat surface is ideal for your pet.
Prognosis
Cerebellar hypoplasia is non-progressive, meaning it doesn't get worse over time. Most dogs can live a normal, high-quality life as long as they retain enough coordination to control basic function and stay active.
