Meet Irwin,
About: Irwin is friendly, happy & very sweet. Initially very shy and timid when he first came in, we have watched Irwin grow into an exceptional dog with heart of pure gold. He is best suited with an experienced owner as he can be a little anxious when meeting new people & entering new environments - but having said this, Irwin is able to centre himself & gain confidence very quickly - he just has minor reservations at first. Once he has warmed up, he becomes excited to meet you, playful & super social. He loves to engage with his handlers & reciprocates affection.
Irwin is best suited to calm & quiet home environment as he is also a quiet dog. He's a little sensitive to noise and is very gentle. He would be a great adventure buddy for active people as he walks like a dream on lead too.
Ideal Home: Irwin is suitable to live in a townhouse, standalone house or on a farm/acreage, with a medium to large yard & high secure fencing.
Access to inside the home would be ideal so that Irwin can spend time with his new family, but he is fine to be in the yard often too.
Family: Irwin is open to meet kids from 6 years & up. Reason for this because Irwin was once very shy, and while he is so far from the dog he once was, he may get a little timid as he settles in to his new home. Young kids of school age would be better understanding of this.
Irwin is fine to live with people who work full-time.
Furry Friends: Irwin is best to be the only dog in the home for now. His dog assessment wasn't bad at all, he was just very excited to meet the other dog & got a little over-excited to make a new friend. This kind of behaviour can be off-putting to other dogs. He needs some socialisation & desensitisation to other dogs before being in a social setting & we will be working with him on that.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Irwin would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Irwin would benefit from post-adoption training, such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience. Professional training may also be an option to develop his confidence. While Irwin rarely jumps, he can be a bit bouncy when he gets excited.
Irwin is still learning his name, but he knows how to ‘sit’ (very well) & 'drop' . Irwin is food motivated, so having treats on hand to mark good behaviour would be ideal. Irwin always takes food from you gently too.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Irwin has medium-energy needs, and he would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 20-30mins a day to keep him happy. Irwin likes toys, especially soft toys & balls but he prefers human interaction more.
Irwin walks very well on a lead with very minimal pulling. He may stop when he is unsure, but a little reassurance from his handler goes a long way. He is fine to be walked on a collar & lead.
Staff Comments: Irwin is a super cute boy. He is very content and chill in his kennel, he is great to walk, he loves affection, is toilet trained & likes to play. He was timid when he first came in but warmed up very quickly, especially to food (devon). He definitely would benefit from confidence building.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
The adoption fee for dogs covers C3 vaccination, health check, heartworm testing, desexing, micro-chipping, and registration.
