Meet maybe the most lovable friendly affectionate staffy ever – Steinbeck! This young dog is such a sweetheart, with a lovely calm temperament who just wants to be friends with everyone, including my cat! Steinbeck is very quiet in the house and usually is very well behaved. He does not jump up to greet you but might come and put a large paw on your knee to ask for a pat or a treat.
He shares his space very amicably with the other dogs in the house, though he should be fed separately if you give him a bone. He is not otherwise food aggressive and will take treats very politely from your hand and does not snatch at them.
Steinbeck spends his days either full on playing with the other dogs (but nicely) or in chilling out at your feet, resting until the next play session. He can sometimes play pretty rough with the other dogs but he is always respectful if they don’t want to play. He is generally very quiet in the house and completely nondestructive though he does like to chew on his soft toys. He sleeps peacefully in his crate overnight but does not like being locked in there. He is a very strong dog, so I have never left him locked in his crate nor locked away in any room for long.
His toilet training is pretty good. As I have no doggy door, he is very reliable about using the puppy training pads overnight.
Outside the house he is OK on a lead once he has got over his initial enthusiasm for peeing on every tree. He is also great in the car, being a quiet and calm passenger even on fairly long road trips; but he has not yet learned to jump in of his own accord. He is great with other dogs but way too enthusiastic in meeting them, any dog, any size, he just wants to meet them all! He is also very calm and friendly with meeting children on our walks, though given his size and energy levels, older children would be preferred rather than toddlers.
As a young dog, Steinbeck would greatly benefit from further training (puppy school or obedience classes). Given his wonderful temperament, he will make someone a great family dog and a loyal loving companion.
