Ohana means family and family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.
{PLEASE read carefully before applying, Ohana has very specific needs.}
Ohana spent his first 12 months isolated from the world and came into SODR's care an absolutely terrified, shell of a young dog. He was scared of the wind, people, birds, the sky, grass...everything he had never experienced.
After a few months in a loving foster home, Ohana has come out of his shell in the home. He gets along great with the resident indoor cats, lived with other dogs before but would need a quiet doggy pal if any, and is just a big gangly legged giraffe who is enjoying his freedom with zoomies around the yard, lots of cuddles, kisses and squeaky toys. He has never had an accident inside, sleeps all night on his foster mum's bed.
Are you who he is looking for?
Someone who will take the time OHANA needs to get to know him. Allow him inside the house and not expect too much from him. A couch potato would be ideal! He will very likely NEVER be the kind of dog you can take for a walk to a dog park or take to cafes. He is social inside his home, but outside is still a scary place and he needs time and patience. Every day is like Groundhog Day with Ohana, he needs many exposures to actually realise that something will not kill him. He does not need daily walks (and may never enjoy walks- you cannot control the outside environment - it constantly changes), he would love to meet a homebody who will cuddle with him on the couch and not put any unrealistic and scary expectations on him.
Ohana does not have the tiniest amount of aggression in him, he MAY chase a small animal outdoors but is fine in the house with cats. He has gotten along great with puppies, but an older or bigger dog may be upset at his play style as he leaps around like a clown. He is just a puppy at heart, at only 15 months old, he has an absolute lifetime of love to give someone special.
He is ok if you leave him alone also, inside or out, but he will bark at new things such as delivery drivers or construction noises. He is a large breed dog, mostly legs though at 34kg. He currently lives with two primary school aged kids, although he does sometimes drop all of his weight on you on the couch or run directly into your legs. So dog savvy kids are best.
He will take time, perhaps several meetings before he will be comfortable with you, but once you put in the work, he will reward you with the most passionate devotion and affection, he has a horrific past that he is trying to forget, contact us if you think you can help him to do so.
Please do not apply if you are wanting a confident, outgoing dog who you can take everywhere with you. Ohana deserves a forever home where he is cherished, loved and adored and where he can feel safe.
