ABOUT BAZIL
Hi my name is Bazil!
I am a very handsome little guy, who has had little bit of a rough time. I was in the shelter briefly but found this to be incredibly scary. Luckily, Little Legs provided me with a much less scary foster home. I can be very shy initially but with patience and kindness my true colours shine.
I need a quiet and patient person who is willing to provide a safe and comforting environment for me. Whilst in foster I have been very brave but still find a lot of things very scary. I am gaining my confidence when people are walking around but still find them a little scary (they are just sooo tall). I do like my treats so there is potential for building a positive association. Close handling frightens me picking me up is not something I would like to happen at all. I may be small but I prefer to have all my paws on the ground. I love my squeaky tennis balls I've even worked out how to play fetch with myself. I'm also partial to a good game of tug (and the odd sock but don't tell my foster mum 🤫) Snuffle mats are so much fun and a great way for me to relax (sniffing releases serotonin). I am partial to a lickmat, licking also helps relax me.
Right now I have my summer cut but my coat can grow long and luxurious. This will require daily brushing and a regular grooming schedule to prevent matts (ouch!). I also do need particular grooming products since I do have sensitive skin. I do settle nicely in my crate at night time but I also enjoy squeezing myself on any pillows I may find. I enjoy soft blankets and plush beds (or my foster mums pillows, they are even better when she's sleeping on them). So far, I have been very polite with my feline foster sister so I could live with a friendly feline. I've also been living with a small confident male terrier he has been fun to follow around but we aren't besties yet. I do like my person most of all. My toilet training is in progress as being outside is very scary for me but I am great at using my puppy pads! When I have been brave enough to go outside I go straight to my potty spot.
Are you the gentle, patient person/s I've been waiting for? If so, please fill out an application form via the LLS website!
MEDICAL NOTES:
Allergy dermatitis, he is generally itchy and requires specific grooming products to not further irritate his skin. It could possibly require allergy medication in future. His ears structurally and hair wise are prone to infections. His ears will need to be kept clean and dry to prevent infections or irritation.
Foster carers have been giving him daily Zylkene and have a diffuser running to help with anxiety. The vet has also recommended to continue with this. Future adopters should also utilise this as it is a non-sedative supplement to aid in anxiety relief.
BEHAVIOURAL NOTES:
Bazil is an exceptionally nervous boy. A crate will be non-negotiable for his future family as this is his safe zone. Sudden movements, loud noises, people walking around and close handling cause Bazil to shut down entirely he just freezes. Within the past two weeks he has become more comfortable any potential adopters will need to be aware of the 3-3-3 rule for rescues for settling in, and that it can take 6 months for a nervous dog to completely settle.
He is naturally nervous and has an anxious disposition. We haven't noted any seperation anxiety signs but he has not been left alone for more than 3 hours.
He is very wary of strangers and will cower in his crate. Men are particularly frightening and he will shake in his crate till they leave.
