Meet Ava,
About: Ava is one of our smartest dogs at the ACF. She is a happy & friendly girl who is suitable for first time owners. Ava is confident, curious, and social.
Ava is suitable for any household environment as she is agreeable in nature & would also be fine for people who spend lots of time outdoors as she is outgoing & would make an excellent adventure buddy!
Ideal Home: Ava is best to live in a house or on a farm/acerage, with a large yard & high, secure fencing. The higher the fence, the better as Ava considers herself an avid climber – but this may be due to boredom. Ava is incredibly smart & we feel that this behaviour quirk will be something that she can work on with training.
Access to inside the home would be ideal so that Ava can be around for her new family as she loves people.
Family: Ava is open to meet kids of any age, as she is gentle & excited to make new friends. She’s very affectionate & loves to engage with people.
Ava is fine to live with people who work part-time, or full-time.
Furry Friends: Ava is open to meet other dogs, during her dog assessment she appeared distracted by the environment but as the assessment went on, she was happy to meet, exchange sniffs, walk along side the other dog, & offer play bows with a loose body & lots of tail wags.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Ava would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of her new owners
Training & Development: Ava would also benefit from post-adoption training, such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience as well as group classes to maintain her doggo social skills.
With further training, Ava would be the type of dog that you could take to a dog friendly café or social event.
Being a Husky X, Ava is known to howl on occasion – usually to get your attention. Ava knows her name & she also knows how to ‘sit’, ‘drop’ & ‘shake’& is learning more as she continues to grow in our care.
Ava is food motivated, so having treats on hand to reward her during training sessions would a fabulous idea. Ava always takes treats gently, too.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Ava has mid-range energy needs & would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 20-30mins per day to keep her happy, healthy & content. Ava is playful, she usually loves personal play with her human friends, but she does show an interest in soft/plush toys, too.
Ava walks well on a lead with minimal pulling. She is fine to be walked on any walking apparatus.
Staff Comments: Ava is very sweet & affectionate – if you it on the ground she will lay between your legs. She initially had skin issues, but after some TLC in our care her skin is looking much better – she may need a skin sensitive diet & a specific shampoo to ease discomfort if it flares up again.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
