About Scout
Requirements:
Experienced owners - breed/behaviour
Must meet all family members
Calm & quiet home
Kids (8yrs+)
Best as only dog - for now - needs socialisation
Meet Scout,
About: Scout is a funny dog who makes us laugh. He is known for his short attention span & way to just make any situation laughable. Scout is friendly & happy with a curious way about him. Scout rarely barks and is generally a quiet dog.
Scout is also a little nervous, with a shy/timid demeanour and as such, he is best suited to an experienced owner – someone who either has breed experience, or someone who has experience with slightly anxious dogs.
Scout is best suited to a calm & quiet home as he is sensitive to noise & is a gentle soul.
Ideal Home: Scout is best to live in a house or on a farm/acreage, with a medium to large yard & high secure fencing. Access to inside the home would be ideal so that he can feel like apart of the family as he is an affectionate dog who loves to be around people.
Family: Scout is open to meet kids from 8 yrs & up. Reason for this is simply due to his timidity, he cause also be boisterous when playing too.
Scout is best to live with people who work part-time – as long as they are committed to his training in socialisation & development.
Furry Friends: Scout is dog friendly, but he is best to be the only dog in the home (for now). Reason for this is that he needs further socialisation before he can live with another dog or meet any dogs in the future, and we are dedicated to his progression. His dog assessment went really well, but he lacks confidence despite his want to interact & make friends.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Scout would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners. Having said this, as he is a kelpie he may have high prey drive.
Training & Development: Scout would also benefit from post-adoption training, such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience as well as group classes to extend on his socialisation training. It may also be worth to gain the expertise of a professional who can assist further on his confidence training.
With further professional training, Scout could be the type of dog that you could take to a dog friendly café or social event.
Scout is still learning his name, but he knows how to ‘sit’ & is learning more commands providing that his short attention span doesn’t get in the way.
Scout is food motivated, so having treats on hand to mark good behaviour would be ideal. Scout prefers high value treats, like devon. He often takes treats from you gently too.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Scout has high-energy needs, being a kelpie this comes as no surprise. Scout would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 30-60mins a day to keep him happy & healthy.
Scout walks well on a lead, but his anxiety in new environments will often cause him to stop. Whilst out walking he is very alert. Scout is best walked on a harness for better control or on a martingale.
Scout doesn’t have any favourite toys that we know of, but he does prefer personal play & human interaction.
Staff Comments: Scout is quite shy but very sweet. He is just a young dog who gets excited easily. He is known to be fussy when dinner time comes around. He prefers his biscuits to be mixed with wet food.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
The adoption fee for dogs covers C3 vaccination, health check, heartworm testing, desexing, micro-chipping, and registration.
