Reyne is an 11mo German Shepherd pup who found herself looking for a new home due to her owner’s deteriorating health. Reyne is a highly intelligent dog and true to her breed is keen to bond with her new person. She attended puppy school when younger, learning to sit, stay, drop and shake and has retained that training. An in-house trainer visited her in her first foster home & deemed her a very smart dog, impressed with her ability & willingness to focus when asked. Reyne spent two days on a temp-hold in kennels with a carer/professional trainer who also assessed her as a great dog. Very smart, focused when asked, willing to learn and not a peep out of her when placed in a kennel. She suggested that she would be an excellent training dog.
Reyne is currently in care with large dog carers who are providing a structured environment for her with equal amounts of exercise, stimulation and consistent training including enforcing boundaries and rules for her to live by. She has responded well to structure and feels safer in an environment where she has that. She is learning things like quiet time, feeding and play outside only and has no problem with being left at home each day while they work (no separation anxiety). She’s fully house trained and has mastered a dog door which gives her yard access for toileting. Reyne happily sleeps on her own bed in a carer’s bedroom at night. She travel well in the car, laying quietly in the back seat and is an excellent co-pilot. Her favourite thing is a game of ball/catch and has a bag full of toys she likes to offer her carers for playtime. This activity is important for her physical and mental stimulation as well as sheer enjoyment, where she can burn off some energy whilst spending one-on-one time with her people so making time for this exercise each day is recommended to continue.
Initially we thought she had lead reactivity when out walking & seeing people and dogs. We realised it was more a lack of exposure/socialisation causing her to become over-excited, yelp and bark, pulling hard on her lead. She met a few dogs whilst at the training site and discovered they make great friends and are a lot of fun to play with which she did through the wire of the enclosures, bowing and racing, or face to face in the yard. She enjoys long walks and her current carers continue to encourage positive introductions & interaction when meeting neighbours and dogs. It is essential for her social and mental stimulation that this continues.
Reyne will need work on recall and voice commands whilst continuing to learn to walk on a halti/lead which assists in redirecting any anxious/excitable behaviour on seeing dogs or kids playing footy etc. She was introduced to the halti when in temporary hold which she is adjusting to and will quickly learn that any pulling on her snot is caused by her. Teaching her lead manners needs to continue. She loves meeting people and enjoyed cuddling on the couch with her former owners 11yo daughter.
Ideally, Reyne’s new home must involve a large breed/GSH experienced owner who intends to involve her and themselves in some sort of club/training environment where she can be stimulated, given a job to do, burn off some energy and further her training/learning. She would make the perfect trainer dog for people in that business.
She is a 36kg dog at less than 12 months and likely has some filling out to do yet, so will require a strong hand and an owner who sustains her obedience and furthers her confidence and learning. She is at a crucial age where any lax attitude towards training could have a detrimental effect that may be difficult to correct. We wouldn’t be recommending a home with small or young children, purely due to her size (appx. 700mm to shoulder to floor). She has lived with cats and would be fine with a dog savvy cat as long as her owner provides the cat with a safe place and develops verbal control over her. There is no prey drive involved, she simply wants to “play” with a creature significantly smaller than her using big, clumsy paws in the process. One carer observed her interacting with 2 cats sitting up bar stools at her owner/carer’s home, where a poke with her nose was rewarded with a hiss or thunderpaw that had her trotting off immediately. Like most dogs, she will chase if they run, however as long as they have a safe place to retreat to they should be just fine. Baby gates are an excellent tool for providing safe boundaries between new cats and dogs. She just doesn’t understand her own size.
She will need training with off lead recall when playing ball/fetch but can become focused on other things in an open space like kids playing footy and shamelessly chases and steals their ball. Most people good about it and she doesn’t damage the ball however recall and heeding instructions when called in public places is paramount, no matter how much fun she’s having.
This beautiful dog has a whole lot more to learn about life and the right person is one who is willing to show her how to be her best self. She would not do well as a back yard ornament so interested applicants should provide details of their experience and their intentions/plans for her. Any information supporting those plans will be viewed favourably. We undertook to provide this magnificent dog with the perfect forever home and we intend to make good on that promise.
If you think Reyne is the perfect dog for you/exactly what you’ve been looking for, please send in an application and be sure to provide as much information as you think is relevant to assist us in deciding where she would do best.

Medical notes
Reyne had an allergic reaction to some type of grass in her carer’s yard causing her to scratch her ears and belly. This cleared after a few days with a generic antihistamine. She hasn’t had a repeat episode since moving sites, however applicants should be aware that it could be a minor issue in Spring.
